Returned my Mercedes S Class today (end of a 3 year lease). End of somewhat of an era for me as this was my 5th Mercedes S Class. Debated for a while between Tesla S and the new Mercedes S Class & following back to back test drives between a P85 and a new Mercedes S, I finally decided on a P85. For me, it boiled down to a choice between "solid, luxurious but boring" and "new, fun and exciting"!
Frankly, I haven't been this excited by a car for many many years!

P85 | Pearl White | Black Performance Leather | 21" Silver Turbines | Pano | Tech Pkg | Premium Lighting | Parking Sensors | Piano Black | Fog Lights | Sub Zero | Alcantara | UHFS | Smart Air | Dual Chargers | Delivery - late July |

    Right choice!

You may recognize the Mercedes steering column (complete) which is off some Merc, now discontinued. Maybe you won't face a learning curve with the CC stalk like many of us did (still do!).

Clearly you are not someone who can be dazzled by car wash disco lights.

Yes, I have had Jaguars since 1970 and until last year when I picked up my Model S I have no desire to have a Jaguar again. This is a big thing for me because Jaguar now has the F-Type coupe and it is a very cool car. Having said that I still pinch myself every time I drive the Tesla.

Congrats and good choice, hcrk! I think the multi-month wait adds that extra little bit of frosting on the cake too. Or at least that's what I'll be telling myself as I pass the time forum hopping, video watching, and article reading. Gives some time for the obsession to build further....

also replacing a Mercedes S with the Tesla Model S P85+... moving the S to the coast as a spare car when there. Still have an SL63 AMG... hard to say goodbye to this one...

New S85 is not the end of my Mercedes Era but close, since 1983 my primary vehicle has been a Mercedes. Just sold my Mercedes car but still have a Sprinter van. Agree with HCRK about trading solid luxury for fun, exciting but I love the interior of this car. Also sold a BMWZ3 which was fun to drive but it does not compare with the driving fun of the S85. This is my first all electric car but so far no regrets. The range on this car is great and for me was the tipping factor on my decision to buy. Although I am learning about the differences in driving electric vs. ICE, I do not feel like I have to constantly monitor my driving which was my expectation.

My my first trip in the car was from the showroom home, over two hundred miles. Having read the forum for a while I asked the delivery specialist about anything special I should do to be sure I made it safely. His response was " drive it like you stole it, this car was made for fun". I made that trip home with confidence and 74 mile to spare. That quote comes to mind daily as I enjoy this new wonderful driving experience.

I am anxiously waiting on late August delivery of my P85. I suspect the wife will be elbowing her way into it and out of her '14 S class (her 5th). I am looking forward to the plug-in hybrid S class next year so we can dump her gas guzzler. (14 mpg in town with a 20 gallon tank.) I can't wait for the luxury of never going to the gas station.

Will be selling my ML430 and F150 when I get my X. Then all electric never have to buy gas again.

First I have to tell what happened yesterday I was in front of a Jaguar that looks almost like a Model S. A guy pulls up next to me in traffic and starts asking questions about the car it was priceless. We already want to buy the X when it drops and as much as we drive with two electric cars may never have to buy gas again.

I couldn't quite part with my 1999 S500 Grand Edition, so I kept it (it's kind of a modern classic, IMHO). It doesn't come out too frequently, but it's still fun when it does (especially trying to remember to press the brake to stop).

I thought long and hard about S550 Plug-In vs S85.. I really like the new S-Class body style... man, saw a black one the other day with the DRL lights on.... damn looks good. Can't imagine driving the 16 miles or whatever on a 100hp electric motor in that thing though, that must suck. Going all electric really is the best answer.

Maybe Mercedes will license it all from Tesla and put it in the S-Class someday.... that would be something.

Hey, I'm drinking the Tesla Kool-Aid too. We live in rural Oklahoma. Unfortunately a 300+ mile day without good charging at the other end is a common reality here in the hinterlands. 90+% of our driving is totally doable in a BEV now. Unfortunately, about once a month some sort of ICE is a practical necessity.
If the Tesla turns out to be reliable, I suspect you may be right about a Model S (or maybe an X) displacing her S class. I tried to talk her into that without success.
