Escort Passport 9500ci vs Waze app

I have been considering getting the Escort Passport 9500ci and installing it myself (probably run me about $1200-$1500 depending on where I buy it). However, for the last week I have been trying out the 'Waze' app on my iphone (which is FREE) and I have to say, I'm really freakin impressed. So much so that I might just forget about the Escort Passport.

While I understand it's apples vs oranges, I think about the reason why I would get the Escort - to detect cops and avoid speeding tickets. I was intrigued about how the Escort can hook up to your mobile phone and connect with other Escort users to automatically sync up detected radars, etc. But Waze does the same thing. And more. Obviously it's relying in it's user base to be accurate and report police and traffic incidents because Waze has nothing to do with radar/laser detection, but DAMN! - since I started using it for the last week it's been spot on. I suspect the user base of Waze is so large that there are enough users reporting events (cops, disabled vehicles, etc) on all the major highways. It has bluetooth integration so I get an audio warning about approaching speed traps. 'police reported ahead' or something like that comes out over my speakers. That's just awesome!

I know a lot of you have been getting the Escort Passport installed, but have any of you tried Waze? What's your opinion of it?

I use both. I'm a belts and braces kind of guy :)

Waze has the capability to be awesome - it just needs enough users using it.

I use both as well and neither is perfect, both need more users. Waze, obviously has great mapping and community reporting of traffic hazards. Escort Live has "automatic" reporting of Ka & laser intercepts, so I find that I get more live radar data from Escort users than Waze users.

The challenge with each is to get them to feed into the MS audio system.

I've been a Waze for a couple of years. I love it. It does more than just show where the police are hanging out. Traffic, road hazards, etc, all in one location. I hooked up my iPad in my MS and I use it everyday. You can't beat the price either :)

I've used waze for about four years and it was definitely not great at first, but living in NY/NJ, the user base has grown considerably and the last year or so it has been very impressive. Nothing is perfect when it comes to traffic and finding cops, but this is very very good. I wrote Waze a few months ago and suggested they work with Tesla on a native App for the Model S!
