EVs unsuitable for use as pursuit cars, apparently

Phony reasons. Police should never use autopilot in emergency or pursuit conditions anymore than they would use standard cruise control under those circumstances.

Police are trained in emergency and persuit tactical driving. Under no circumstances should they switch to autopilot to catch bad guys etc.

ICE Police cars themselves sometimes run out of gasoline as well. In long pursuits the will bring in a fresh car and driver to run down the perps while the first car refuels and again take up the chase. Often strategy is to simply run the bad guy out of gas so he will coast to a stop and be arrested. Cops will need to learn new strategy and policies to move to the electric age.

Most police shifts are spent at idle or slowly driving around town in their normal duties. Batteries should be better than just sitting in an idling ICE car for hours.

While normally a cop car can do a full shift on a single charge, they often have many opportunities to stop at a charger during their shift while doing paperwork or radio work. Also should be able to grab some additional juice duing shift changes etc.

As Ev's get faster, cop cars are going to also need to step up to keep pace. A typical cruiser with light bar usually topps off about 120 mph.

wonder how many were actually Tesla’s as opposed to the i3...

None. They put pictures in the Daily Mail *spit* of i3’s. You should see the comment section. It’s a *sugar* show of ignorance, stupidity and hatred of change.

I am shocked to hear how lawless things are in England however. All these long distance high speed pursuits... shocking really. You don’t even see anything about it in the media, obviously covered up. /s

Bit of a thread bump, but unmarked Tesla on the M40 heading off in pursuit…

There are times when the police will deliberately ram into another vehicle to end a dangerous pursuit.

In this instance, you don't want the police car to stop that action.

However, this must surely be true of most cars they have nowadays and so there must be a solution. Albeit using a Tesla for this sounds very expensive.

A surprising number of public servants are permitted to have blue lights fitted to their car as a perk of the job. Couple that with people who fit them to skip traffic jams and bully others out of their way, and the actual number of undercover police cars is tiny in comparison.

Well it wasn't in a hurry because he needed to go the toilet, he was leaving the services :)

Several forces have bought Tesla’s as a mixture of response and traffic cars. South Wales and British Transport Police have them beginning operations now. There is a small fleet of demonstrators around the UK now, including MY. Most forces have strategic objectives to move to zero emissions by certain years, BTP are 2025. BTP have bought Tesla’s, KIAs etc. Any car available to buy as a Police car has to meet certain test requirements, so Tesla have met these.

I hope to live long enough to see our inevitable dystopian future where there are Model Y's and 3's following their human partner officer who has jumped out of the vehicle to catch the perp on foot, siren proclaiming: "Pursuit in progress, law abiding citizens you have nothing to fear, please stand clear, Pursuit in progress, law abiding citizens you have nothing to fear..." with the heavy, metallic thuds of the Optimus "officer bot" approaching on foot at 50mph, increasing in volume from the distance.

They might want to invest in some sort of rubber bull bar setup or something for their traffic vehicles if they're going to be Tesla's though... given the parts wait times at the moment.
