EZPass not reading, getting hit with MAX TOLL per instance

I will take a photo tomorrow. I mounted it behind the nose cone it not easy to photograph.
However is the black rectangular box, nothing special. When you receive it you call easy pass and they set it up with your green pass account.

Oh I see.....only issue with me is I swap my ezpass depending on where I go..btwn jersey and NY. No need for photo. I guess they just are able to set that up now. Because I know before they didn't offer that option.

Yes they do make it. I just got mine and is working fine so far.
The new model S have an "unshielded" are on the right side of the rear view mirror, in theory the regular EZ PASS tag should work there.

This is consistent with what my delivery specialist told me last week about my own new 70D (delivered 9/23) -- said that recent Model S cars have a specific provision for that. But I looked at the glass and do not see any area that is different. Is there a way to see that area? Or do you just place it on the glass close to the black rubbery area to right of the mirror?
In case anyone asks, I did not ask how new the car has to be (i.e., I do not know when this feature was added in production. My car was built between 8/23 and 8/28.)

I think we're all being told different things. I was told the original windows were defective. Then they made a v2 window that had an area that worked for a while. Then there is a v3 window that came out for autopilot and is the current window they use and this blocks ezpass again.

Looking at my ezpass history recently wondering why my account is replenishing more often than it should, I noticed that ever since I moved up to the finger lakes 3 months ago and my work schedule takes me every thursday from around Harrison NJ straight up through Newburgh I noticed that New York was slamming me with a MAX TOLL every time I get on the NY Thruway at Garden State Parkway (exit 14) and getting off at Newburgh (exit 17).

The charge should be $1.33 but they are charging me $16.10. this happened 9 different times so they have ripped me off ~$132 over the last 3 months. (basically once a week). all of this is because the ezpass doesn't read through the Tesla Model S's defective windshield.

In NJ (aka NJTurnpike) they are able to just read license plates and figure out where you entered and exit and my account gets charged appropriately (I've confirmed this reading the statements and looking at charges), but in NY they just hit you with a MAX TOLL of $16.10 per instance. WTF. currently disputing this.

so basically a PSA to anyone using these ezpass (& equiv) tags on Tesla's KNOWN defective windshield to check your account statements for errors like this. (fyi Tesla refused to replace my defective windshield even though obviously it was delivered to me defective on day 1.)

What I find really outrageous about this is that they know you are an EZPass customers. They have linked your license plate to your EZPass account and then they have the nerve to bill you the max charge knowing that you are actually on EZPass. I wish they'd do away with the transponder nonsense and just go with license plates that they can already read.

Have you considered dismantling your EZ Pass and putting the electronic components in a waterproof enclosure behind the nosecone? That should solve this for good...

I don't think the bolded word means what you think it means....

Also, I think they're up to "v4", which has a black spot that transmits ezpass (I have the "v3" windshield, I was early for the "v4" by a week or so)

External Green Pass!!!?!?!? Maybe this is new...

yea that would be new. i know they made external regular (non-green) ezpass. but an external GREEN one would be a new offering from them...

I may be partially responsible for this <pats self on back>, though I didn't know it had happened until I read about it here.

After I ordered my P85D last October, I started looking into the Green EZ Pass, but also knew from reading posts on TMC that I'd need an external transponder, which I was already familiar with because I had one on my Acura. I of course learned that they did not offer this. I asked that the rep I was speaking with document my request, and pass it along to a supervisor. She said she was doing that, and also gave me a number to call, which I did. Over the next few months I had a couple of other interaction with EZ Pass, including the one to get an external pass for my Model S once I received it, and every time I contacted them I asked the rep to document, for his or her supervisor, my request for a Green, External transponder.

Of course my calls / requests may, in retrospect, have had absolutely nothing to do with this happening, but in my head I'll take just a little credit for it anyway! :)

Yobigd20,
I have extensive experience with the NY ezzpass since we originally lived near Rochester and my wife's family is from Auburn. First let me say that you should call EZPass and tell them of the problem. If you give them exact dates and entrance and exit interchanges they should refund your money ( probably with a credit to your account). It may take a couple of calls to get it done.
I know this because of the number of times I have had to call for this problem. I had the original square pass which I placed under the mirror. This worked fine for a year. Then they sent me a new pass with the rounded shape. This failed multiple times until I mounted it over the black dots to the right of the mirror. ( I don't have the TACC hardware). This worked at multiple interchanges. I still had a failure at the same interchange on the same day which I attribute to that specific lane's hardware.

So is the "black spot" the elliptical shaped area to the right of the mirror, covered with a rubbery sort of material?
I asked my local service center about it on Saturday (yesterday) and the two people I asked did not seem to know about the apparently recent change to add this area and said they did not know if that is where to mount the EasyPass. they suggested using the external type.

I'd like to see a photo of someone with a very recent car (mine is VIN 1006xx, build last week of August) with a successful EasyPass installation, so I can place mine in same area. Thanks in advance if someone can do that.

My 70D was delivered 8-11-15. The EZPass has worked all times at the Throgs Neck Bridge and the New Rochelle toll on I 95. Have not tried elsewhere. I installed the pass upside down as suggested by another Tesla owner.

Several threads have dealt with this. The position on the windshield is critical and when it's properly placed it will work every time. I learned that the hard way myself. Can you post a photo of where you have it attached?

I did a test this weekend and the Massachusetts EasyPass worked perfectly on the MassPike (2 tollgates) when my spouse held it up in the position over the black patch. We did not have to hold it upside-down. I will mount it there now that the test proved it works OK. Thanks again!
