OK - this is how I resolved the backup camera issue: I set up an appointment with my local Tesla Service center today and they replaced the camera under warranty. A great experience with the service center, BTW. There were some interesting impacts associated with the failed camera other than the obvious failing to view the back of the car: the cruise control and Autopilot also failed to work properly. I also observed but I cannot verify it: that while the backup camera sensor was not functional, the entire OS seemed to slow down. For example, entering a request into Navigation entry line created a much longer wait, than you would have expected, to receive back a trip plan.
