Family wants to delay model Y for Giga Texas but...

I’m not 100% sure since the sales tax prevented me from pulling the trigger.

Since we have multiple states where you can’t buy a Tesla, seems like this would be a fairly common thing though.
California is a special case, because they consider the vehicle sales tax a use tax, so if you pickup the car in California to be registered in another state, you cannot drive/operate the car within the state. In order to exempt California sales tax, you have to file a notarized form with the department of tax and fee administration, showing that you are having the car shipped out of state, for out-of-state delivery. In most states, tax is collected by the DMV when you get your plates/tabs... California is different, in that if you buy your car from a commercial place that is licensed to sell cars, sales tax must be collected by the seller, which is why you have to have the seller and buyer notarize the form i mentioned from the department of tax and fee administration.
