Headlights are off. Also, I noticed something. The "grayed out" section of the speedometer is the color of the entire speedometer when Valet mode is not on. I didn't try with my glasses on, but I suspect the brighter lower speeds/power levels would be visible through my sunglasses! This means they could just have the non-Valet default be "lit" rather than "unlit".

That's just insane. But we knew that already.

That is a very constructive (and easy to implement) suggestion...

Let me make one as well: suggest you start a new thread titled "7.1 Beta Testers - constructive suggestions". I'm sure more than a few beta testers are on the forum (just not identifying themselves), and that's something they would probably take the time to read and maybe incorporate in their feedback to Tesla.

Ground rules for the thread should be "NOT for complaining, only for specific solutions for specific problems", and this could be the first. I'd do this, but I don't have a solution to propose, and don't want to steal your thunder (or wind) Cyclone.

Well, that's answers a huge question on how the speedometer became so difficult to see: it was a mistake! They really need to, dare I say, must fix this prior to 7.1. If they fix this one bug, I will upgrade, for the sole purpose of getting rid of the daily message, and just deal with the other nonsense. I am looking forward to the better Media app.

What's the issue with the speedometer being washed out? Trying to understand what the issue is as I have 7.0 now and haven't noticed this. I have a dark red car though. Thanks.

In 7.0 (classic version), numbers and ticks on speedo are in gray, not white. So, contrast with black background is minimal, which makes it difficult to read, particularly in glare. That's a problem. What Cyclone noticed (see posted pic above) is that with valet mode on, the "allowable" speed (up to 60) is white, and above that is grayed out. He observed that Tesla SHOULD have ALL of the numbers and ticks in white for better contrast and readability - save the graying for "not allowed" parts of the range.

The numbers and main hash marks are grey -- they used to be a brighter white-ish grey (believe the sub hash marks were always the darker color). In valet mode the numbers apparently are brighter in the range 0-80kW range, and greyed out above that to indicate valet mode. But when valet mode isn't on, all the numbers are grey. Seems like a bug to me, where the numbers should all be lighter when not in valet mode.

The low contrast makes them unreadable in bright light. At night you can see them, but only if you turn up the brightness to where it ruins your night vision. Of course, if you have a silver or white car, the car picture in the middle ruins your night vision regardless of brightness level.

Same with the climate controls. In many lighting situations it just looks black. With the pre-seven layout there was hardly ever a lighting condition that would make either the speedometer or the climate controls unreadable. I've pretty much stopped showing the car because the new layout is so poor.

I was incorrect earlier about Valet and lit vs. unlit when not in Valet mode. The "lit" portion of Valet mode is what is one when not using that mode. I had neglected to take into account I was not wearing my sunglasses and that is why it looked like the unlit part was what I normally see on my commute to work.

This is my view today through my Rx polarized sunglasses. Note, this is without glare. It's even worse with glare.

Well, I held out for weeks and kept getting notifications on my phone that I have a software update waiting for the car. When I finally upgraded, I went from 6.2's 2.5.71 straight to 7.0's 2.9.12
My "classic" S was at my local Service Center yesterday for a few issues and while there got the V7.0 (2.9.12) update. I assume that is the current version for the non-AP "classic" S cars. Correct?

Potentially. The first 2.9.40 rollout was yesterday to an AP-car. It could just be that your service center just hadn't downloaded 2.9.40 to their systems yet. I think we need to wait another week to see how rollouts go before we can deep .40 AP-only and thus, .12 the latest available to Classics.

Wow. Thanks for uploading this picture. This is definitely a deal breaker for me (not like I haven't said that before, but this photo confirms it). I am stunned that Tesla has not made this a "break-fix" issue.

I hope it gets tweaked in a future point update. As you can see, the odometer is bolder and brighter. If just brighter (like 6.2 was), it would be visible. But I wonder if the use-case of visibility with sunglasses on is just one they didn't consider.

Btw, that picture is at 100% brightness in daytime mode.

In some lighting conditions, no sunglasses is no better than what is shown in your picture. I've even seen it where the only things you can see are the car and the speed. Basically, when it's really bright out, your pupils contract and the low contrast items just disappear.

Yep. My first day with v7 I though the dash display had actually failed on me.
