I notice the 2019 Audi e-tron is vision + front radar only: This is despite having their super-advanced hands-free L3-capable zFAS system (as seen in the A8!) running the show.
don't need to launch with all the toys as sales will be strong enough anyway? Likely a cut down version of the zFAS processing module. My guess is it will be added to model range in due course. other thoughts - if the E-tron has everything then ICE sales might be compromised, meybe they keep some features back to ensure ICE sales maintained - the margins are likely very tight on the e-tron as Audi will be determined to compete/undercut Tesla. Most trinkets cost nothing in volume but serious hardware processing does cost.
@J1mbo I am not sure you can read it that way. The diagram seems to be the network of systems of chassis, brake and drive control which make use of forwards camera, radar and navigation for pre-emptive action. The diagram is missing most of the cameras too we know are there.
@J1mbo @thegruf I checked. Audi e-tron has up to five radars, six cameras, twelve ultrasonics and one Lidar. Download PDF here: Electrifyingly fun to drive: the Audi e-tron (page 5 of PDF)
Thanks for that, I guess this is all this is missing from the network diagram because it will be optional and market limited, like the A8:
@J1mbo Optionality or market differences may well play a part but I think the biggest reason for that image is the drivetrain simply uses a subset of the components and that is what is reflected in that image. Not related components not shown.
Sales, not sure if they really want to sell? WLTP is in, 417 km for the basic version, 377 km fully equipped, weighing in at almost 2,7 tonnes. Wow. Charging speed is good though, but how fast will a Model 3 with CCS charge? Max 175 kW possible?
Model 3 and e-tron quattro are probably not competing for exactly the same customers so I can’t see how that matters. It is the overall package that matters and different customers want different things. I would be very surprised if Audi does not sell every single e-tron they can make so at the very least I would drop any innuendo that the specs are implying not wanting to sell them. Comparing specs and spec winners is fine of course. I just do not think there is any ulterior motive in the e-tron quattro specs. The car seems to have pretty much everything and then some a modern high-end Audi in this size/class has.
Are you sure they are not just including the parking cameras? Based on what we know from the A8, their L3 system only uses one camera (with radars and lidar obviously).
Misunderstanding. I did not mean to imply all cameras are used by the Traffic-jam Pilot (or Assist) which they are not. My point was mainly that Audi e-tron quattro is no different from the new Audi A6 etc in terms of radar and Lidar count after the suggestion it might only have one radar and therefore be similar to Tesla.
By the way personally I am not even sure if Audi e-tron quattro only has six cameras. It might have eight: four parking cameras, EyeQ3, night vision and two mirror cameras would total eight. Traffic-jam Pilot/Assist of course uses EyeQ3 only though the zFAS does have access to the parking cameras too and does the 360 stitching up for example. But this is all beside the point. Lidar and radar count was the question.
I am sure the optional radar and lidar would also be used by the drivetrain The diagram must be the lowest common denominator. i.e. every e-tron has this.
My guess is that even that diagram might include optional components and that it really is the extent of what the drivetrain itself makes use of ie what systems the drivetrain controller takes into consideration. At least this is how it would be on an Audi ICE diagram though Audi e-tron quattro could be somewhat different in standard equipment. Of course drivetrain will still take inputs from other systems like automatic emergency braking that does talk to Lidar and so forth but this would be just what the system described in the diagram itself, directly uses.
Anyone know if the Audi A8 with the limited L3 capabilities actually got released in Germany? I'm not finding much information on how it's performing in actual customer hands.
Nope, apparently no regulatory approval yet in Germany where they are aiming first. The car is out with the Lidar but the Level 3 feature is not sold yet.
