First multi-coat Red confirmation or delivery - who will it be?

I completely agree! I just noticed you're located in Freemont. I wonder if you'll be one of the first to take delivery?

Andrewket I do expect to be one of the early ones, but not the first. There are many, like yourself, with Reservation Numbers below mine, and I expect you and they will receive delivery before me. I think they will try to follow a combination of reservation number and Finalization date for delivery sequencing.

I am going down to check out the test track and see if there are any REDS out there yet. Will let you know if I see any.

Pics or it didn't happen! My guess is that you're right, the cars will be built in sequence order. But you can pick yours up the day it's ready. Mine will take 2 weeks to get transported across the country. I really hope production starts early March and not March 31. The wait is killing me.

Checked the track this afternoon, and only saw a white MS being tested. I will attempt to post a couple of pictures for practice, to be sure I can do it when the REDS final appear.

As someone who waited for his sweet Silver Sixty, I wish I could give you all some direction on HOW to wait.

It's worth it, and we are all standing beside you - heck you'll get a better car than we will, with various hardware and software upgrades coming along.

ps. maybe some of us will be a little bit jealous, as we wanted access to the red too, but wanted the car MORE. 8 )

Spoke with Tesla today. I'm really trying to get a VIN so that I can lock in the rate on a loan that I've already been approved for. Until they have the VIN and the check is issued, the rate is subject to change.

The person I spoke with didn't have any information other than "Red starts production in March." I get the impression if he knew, he would have told me.

Ok so that's Friday !

I have a delivery specialist assigned. I spoke with Tesla again today because I really, really, wanted a VIN. PenFed's rate is going up tomorrow, and without a VIN I can't finalize the loan, so I'm going to get hit with the rate increase to 1.79%. It's not a huge deal, but $500 is $500. That would cover half the cost of a 3M film install for the entire car.

While speaking with my DS, I learned: 1) I'm not getting a VIN today, tomorrow, or likely anytime in the next few weeks. 2) She indicated that I was likely to receive my VIN in early APRIL. I pushed back, saying I thought Red was going into production in March, and based on my sequence number I should likely be towards the front of the line. She then said the only data she had was that the expected delivery window was April/May, so she's guessing a VIN in early April.

Soooo what do I conclude? That DS's really don't have much visibility into the build process. I think she is in the dark as much as we are as to when production will begin. I'm taking the factory tour tomorrow, I'll report any new findings... other than Red just cost me another $500 :\

There are some DS's, however, that 'navigate in the dark' better than others.

Andrew -

On the tour tomorrow, I would be very interested in the answer to 'what are the manufacturing issues with producing red tomorrow?' We have heard that the paint robot can just run solvent thru the system and start another color on the next car.... but if you have ever actually purchased high quality car paint, it's cost is VERY HIGH. (that's why they sell it by the ounce, not by the gallon). This does not seem consistent with a company that is striving to become more cost efficient. But we have also heard that they don't have 11 separate paint booths, so what's the actual story?

Also, It would be interesting to hear how long it takes to finish a car once it is 'body in white' (the step just before painting) and the finished car. I recently saw a thread that indicated this was 9-10 days. Can you confirm this??

Thanks, and good luck on the tour.

Having gone through PenFed myself, I can say that the rate is determined on the day when Tesla cashed the loan check. For example, if you have gotten an approval today with the rate of 1.49% but you didn't take delivery of the car until March, then PenFed will use the rate that is set for Mar as your rate for the entire loan. This is stated explicitly on the check that PenFed sent to me (the check is good for 60 days but the rate is determined when PenFed received the check back from Tesla).
