I still think the piece of wood is better than the rubber, but from Wiztecy's post, either should work. I guess if you've got the rubber pad under your living room couch, and your over-weight [relatives, neighbors, fill-in-the-blank] plop down on it, the effect could be nearly the same in terms of weight.
