FM module added for MCU2 upgrade

Wanted to share my recent experience - I just had installed the FM radio option for the HW3 upgrade this week. The FM reception works great and no issues there. What was unusual was that after installation there was an icon for Serius radio!! Was surprised because I have the all glass roof and could not get Serius because the antenna was in the panaroof option only. I called Serius and they activated the radio for a 90 day trial!! Bottom line - if you get the FM upgrade and have the all glass roof, DO NOT activate Serius, it won’t work....the car doesn’t have the antenna to receive the signal, though Serius will tell you that it is activated.

Do you have the premium audio option? Either way, it is great to know that the Serius/XM unit can be retrofitted. I assume that if you hooked up your own antenna it would still work, although reception could be really terrible depending on where you could fish antenna wires.

Tesla did eventually put that antenna in the rear hatch glass to add XM/Serius back to the all glass roof. I have always been curious as to whether the wiring harness for standard audio cars at that point has that sat antenna in the harness. I assume it was cheaper to manage two harnesses than to put the premium wiring in every car.

You would think the programming would be set to include that you had the antenna or not. I never had the S/XM option before the MCU2 upgrade. I’m scheduled for this next week so have to see if this is also popping up on my X.

I stand corrected - I had added both MCU2 and HW3 - couldn’t remember which one was with FM upgrade. The good news is that the FM works. I do have the premium sound package, but I don’t think my car had the antenna in the rear hatch ( it’s a 2017 ).

According to TeslaTap XM (and likely the hatch antenna wiring) didn’t return until mid 2018.

You could also install a standalone xm antenna. Not as clean as under the glass. But will allow you to use it. Since all S/X come with premium audio now they probably only make and stock the xm/fm tuner.

I hope that turns out to be true. I would wire my own XM anteenna. I doubt Tesla wants to take support calls about non-functional XM though. Or have to provide service around DIY antenna wiring.

It would still need to be enabled. So maybe this owner just got lucky?

I saw somewhere else that the retrofit radio has FM and XM tuners. As mentioned though, you would need to somehow add an XM antenna.

Does the adding back the FM tuner fix the rear two door speakers having half the volume and absolutely no bass after going from MCU1 to MCU2 with standard audio system?
