Folsom to South Lake Tahoe: Your experiences please

We are planning to stay in SLT during the July 4th weekend. First time we're taking the Tesla up there. I'd like to ask those who do the trip, what's your usual process, and also, what's your car, so we have an idea of how many rated miles you consumed ? On that topic, how many RMs do you usually consume uphill, and doing what speed ? My plan was to top off at either Folsom SC, then head up. We're staying someplace with no readily accessible charging. Do you typically attempt to top off at one of the hotels or casinos ? If so, which one do you typically use ? Or do you head up to Truckee ? And how many RMs do you usually save for the ride down as a safe buffer to the SCs on both route (US-50 and I-80) down ?

Harvey's has a bunch of available Tesla wall connectors. The casino is open 24/7 so it is completely safe to use at any time. You could drop off your vehicle there and then walk back to your hotel (or take a Lyft) and then come back after a few hours.

Consumption is heavy going up the hill on 50. I'd charge up to 80% or more with the 75D to play it safe. The supercharger at Palladio Parkway has a lot more things to do (Whole Foods for a beer/food, movie theater, Red Robin, shops) than the Folsom Outlet supercharger.

I assume you are taking highway 80 to SLC (very difficult to take 50 without electric hookup KOA overnights) so going up to Reno from South Lake Tahoe should only take a few hours of charging at Harvey's.

Have fun! Weather around Tahoe is perfect right now. :)

That's quite a rapid and very helpful response, thanks! Do you recommend taking 80 up and optionally topping off at Truckee before heading down to SLT ? I haven't really mentally considered either route from an EV perspective, having only done them in an ICE before.

We aren't heading to SLC BTW, just to SLT :) Presumably a range charged 75D should be enough to carry 4 adults up and back. What is the protocol for Harveys ? Do you usually ask them beforehand, or simply park and use the HPWCs if they're free ?

I did this trip about 3 weeks ago in a S 75D.

Charged to 90% (230 RM) in Folsom and arrived with 84 RM left.
So used 146 RM to go 89 actual miles.

Coming back I left with 210 RM and arrived at Nut Tree with 125.
So used 85 RM to go 141 actual miles.

I've always charged at Harrahs - they have 4 chargepoint outlets in the valet parking, and have been very welcoming.

I have done this trip many times and also wrote a trip report once on this forum. I would atleast have a 75 mile buffer when you leave Folsom. The climb will eat up a lot of miles and you would need decent buffer once you arrive there as there are no superchargers around. I recommend staying at a place with destination chargers as the first time I travelled both the Harrah's and Harvey's chargers were full. I had to sneak into Coachman hotels parking lot and get it charged. Next two times I just booked myself into Coachman hotel and plugged in overnight. SLT desperately needs a supercharger

So we made it up . Here are my experiences:

* range charged to 250 miles (my current max) at Folsom Palladio, on a very hot afternoon (95ish), and headed up 50E . We were 4 adults , a baby and lots of baby-dominated junk in the trunk and frunk.
* made it to South Lake Tahoe with the gauge reading 115 miles . Mostly sedate driving with some spirited uphill driving by the wife . It was almost 90 while getting here and we had the ac running at high fan with temp at 69 to keep everyone happy .
* Harrahs has 4 chargers . Free to use, but at least one is outright broken, and two of the remaining 3 seem not to be sending any charge to the cars (a volt and a tesla) parked there . I went over to Harvey's, where I was able to charge to 90% overnight for free .

Haven't checked any other charging options and really don't need it at this point, but South Lake Tahoe could really use a SC . Or at least a dozen or so charge points somewhere along Lake Tahoe blvd .

Just came back from North Lake Tahoe, via 50 to folsom, no problems barely need to charge more than 25 minutes and was able to make it all the way home to the bay area. Uphill is a little more challenging but easily doable. Also check the tesla site for destination charging. It did wonders for us. We drove all over and around the lake, every day, even to Reno and sqaw valley. Never as issue.

Basing out of north Lake Tahoe is definitely the recommended option . Multiple SCs around between Truckee and Reno, plus destination chargers . Basing out of South Lake Tahoe is much harder, especially if you plan to do multiple local drives on top of it .

Next time we plan to stay in North Lake Tahoe . Coming back down either 80 or 50 should be ok because of the regen charging .

Harrahs and Harvey's have instituted a paid only parking for holidays and events, even for self parking . I managed to ahem, get past that .
