Liftback is my preferred term as well. To me, it uniquely identifies this type of vehicle.
Some people call it a hatchback, but I don't really feel that fits. My wife drives a hatchback (VW Rabbit) and it's a very different type of body style from this.

I also call it "the best of both worlds" because it has the much nicer styling of a sedan, combined with the extra practicality of a hatchback.

Agreed on all of this. I'd go so far as to say liftbacks have most of the utility of a station wagon with better styling (and without the negative connotations).
 
Given that:

1. The compartment is really too small on the AWD version.
2. It doesn't open and close electrically.
3. The lid material is so soft it can warp when it's closed vigorously.

I call it "That Empty Compartment".
