Ford hyped it’s planned electric F-150 pickup in a media briefing Wednesday, saying the vehicle will be “designed and engineered for hard-working customers that need a truck to do a job.”

The comment seemed to be a dig at other planned electric trucks like Tesla’s Cybertruck and Rivian’s R1T, which Ford suggested are aimed at “lifestyle customers.”

“While all other electric pickups are competing for lifestyle customers, the all-electric F-150 is designed and engineered for hard working customers that need a truck to do a job,” Kumar Galhotra, president of the Americas and international markets at Ford, said in the briefing.

Ford says the electric F-150 is undergoing “tens of thousands of hours of torture testing and targeting millions of simulated, laboratory and real world test miles.” The company says the vehicle will be more powerful than any F-150 available today and deliver commercial and personal customers the “lowest expected lifetime total cost of operation among F-Series trucks.”

Other details include:

The all-electric F-150 will feature dual electric motors targeted to deliver more horsepower and torque than any F-150 available today, the fastest acceleration, and the ability to tow heavy trailers40 percent savings for its lifetime total cost of operationA giant front trunk Over-the-air updates

Ford plans to build the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center where it will build the all-electric F-150 by mid-2022. The Dearborn-based center will add 300 jobs and is part of a $700 million investment in building the all-new F-150 lineup.

Ford trying to Osborne the Cyber Truck and Rivian?

This doesn’t really speak to most F150 buyers. Imo not many Ford ICE truck buyers will make the jump to EV without Tesla fans first spreading the EV Enlightenment. Ford just needs to be ready for when more and more of those ICE truck buyers experience an EV. They’ll go see if there’s an EV version of their favorite truck, and Ford better have one

So far, not telling us anything about the truck. I have had pickups in the past and the F150 was a good work truck. But it also could go deep into the woods and backcountry for firewood, hunting and moving around for a week, and fording creeks and gullies. Not to mention mountain roads. I hope they release more details by the first of next year.

Not a good argument, IMHO. Their product is totally a fashion statement, with its super-high stance and gigantic grill seemingly designed to block your view and mow down pedestrians while having the aerodynamics of a very large brick. But hey, it sure does look macho/brutish/menacing! And you know, that's just what the customer wants, because that's what the customer has been buying, because that's what Ford has been making, because that's what GM has been making, because that's what FCA has been making, and if we want to compete we've got to do what our rivals are doing, because that's what people have been buying, because that's what everyone has been making. . . no matter how ridiculous it is.
