Just saw this article, what does everyone think they want the Model X for if they have already done this to the Model S. I personally think they want to see the doors but that's just conjecture.

Ford pays hefty premium for Model X teardown

I saw this vehicle in a Detroit suburb last week. Saw a manufacturer's tag on it, and asked the driver if he was with Tesla.

    "No, Ford."

Verge article said it was a guy who got the Founders edition for free through the referral program. Good deal for that person.

The Bloomberg article says he got it at the special price of $116,000.

Very good deal, but I wouldn't give away my X unless they offered me 1 mill.

Yeah, I meant "free" as in the upgrade. My mistake.

He could have just as likely turned around and ordered another one and enjoyed the extra profit. Honestly, that's what I'd have done.

What does Ford want with a Model X? They don't make luxury vehicles. Not even the Lincoln line is anywhere in the ballpark (of the price) of a Model X.

Most manufacturers in most industries buy the competition's products to get real metrics on them.

Apparently Ford has a project for a new SUV, not necessarily electric, but could be. This doesn't mean Ford is actually at the engineering stage though. It would most likely be a Lincoln nameplate, and most likely they bought other SUVs.

However, it could be something as simple as measuring the cabin. When you read "Best" in advertising, you can bet they checked all the competition by measuring themselves and not relying on published data.

Saw Mr. Musk tweet this yesterday, implying high resale value of Model X. When will he tweet this ebay listing? The seller is selling below the MSRP of $133,200 , at $124,999. Has been lowering the price continually for the last few weeks.

I wonder if the seller is going to report the gain on his 2016 income tax return.

    Just sayin'.

Yep. For the person asking, there were articles like Go Inside the Lab Where GM Tears Apart Its Competitors’ Cars and The Teardown Artists (from 2006). It's good business practice to know one's competition from all aspects: quality, assembly methods, likely cost of parts, strengths, weaknesses, etc.
