He is referring to those who have purchased the 3.0 battery for their existing original Roadsters - not the 2020 Roadster.

It does create some confusion, if the pack upgrade for old Roadsters is 3.0 what is the new Roadster, 3.5, 4.0?

Either call the older upgraded car Roadster R80 or call the new car 2020 Roadster or Roadster Gen2.

Forum mods are discussing how to separate the names, and will likely make new forum sections soon.
Perhaps 2008-2012 Roadster and 2020 Roadster...

    Old-Roadster and New-Roadster ?

    Roadster-Classic and Roadster-Plaid ?

    1) Older, non-supercharger Roadster has its designation already: Roadster 2.0 , 3.0... Could these be called first gen?
Original one didn't have a separate 12V battery. Later one does. Latest one is with refreshed longer range battery... but they are all non-supercharger class.

    2) On the other hand, 2020 Roadster might delay and become 2021, 2022... so why don't we just call it "next-gen" as some have already called it?

Thank you TEG, I think that’s a great idea.

First Generation, Second Generation or Gen 1, Gen 2 would make the most sense to me.

Tesla RoadsterOS and Tesla RoadsterNG ;)

More seriously: Roadster Classic for the original is a good choose. Or the more traditional naming - Roadster mk-I and Roadster mk-II

I think Gen 1 and Gen 2 will be confusing to people since Gen 1 has v1.5, v2, v2.5, and v3.

I think it should be the v4 Roadster as that is what it is.

The other option is to do it by model year:
    2008-2011 Roadster
2020-Present Roadster (although Idk if that will mess up the URLs when the v5 Roadster comes out in 2030 or whatever - could probably just fix w/ a redirect)

Sounds like a survey would be a good idea with valid proposals from moderators?
Otherwise Classic & 2020 are both pretty catchy...even if it becomes 2021!

Tesla called it 'Next Gen' at the event. That seems a good name to go with.

I agree. And with respect to the discounts and secret levels earned through the referral program, it refers to the Next Gen Roadster.

I suggest changing the name of both Roadster forums (fora?) because if the old one remains just "Roadster" then it is likely to have new folks going there to talk about the new Roadster without reading further down the forum list.

Thank goodness there will be a split coming soon. I agree with the Roadster (2008 - 2012) and Roadster (Next-Gen) categories. I think that makes the most sense.

While we're at it, could this be a good time to finally get a Roadster-specific section in the Classifieds & Parts for Sale section?

    My suggestion is “Roadster MY 2008 - 2012” and “Roadster MY 2020 - “

I know that Elon said “Next Gen Roadster” at the unveil but I seriously doubt that Tesla is going to formally name the car “Next Gen Roadster”. I think it will just be “Tesla Roadster”. And it may not even be badged. The Model 3 has no badging.

I wouldn't call it next gen, as there will be a generation after the next gen.
Then we will have to have to run this thread all over again in ten years.... Ugh.

My vote would be a designation by text as mentioned in the thread already:

    "First" generation: 1.x, 2.x, 3.x
    "Second" generation: 4.x
