After the update to the forum, when I was scrolling through posts in a thread, it would say "Viewing 5/20" or something like that at the top. It wasn't always accurate, but I found it very useful to gauge where I was on a page and to get an idea if I had only a few to get through or if I was in a conversation that was very active. If it was a very active one and time was tight, I would set aside the thread for later and only check threads that had a few unread responses.
Among the problems that cropped up with the update, it appears this feature went away. If there was a way to bring it back I'd be happy.
