Found out my production delay is due to "repairs." Need advice.

I've mentioned in other threads that my production has been taking a really long time. I ordered on Oct 7 and I've been in production for 24 days now.

I finally heard from my DS, who told me he got an email from the factory saying my car is one of several undergoing repairs. I asked what kind of repairs and he said he doesn't have that information. Adding to my frustration is that I will be out of the state from Dec. 22 through the rest of the year, so if I don't take delivery before then, I won't be able to take delivery this year. Thus, I wait an entire year for my rebate. I would also want to be sure I get a new 2016 VIN.

How would you handle this? I don't want to be pain to my DS, but I'm really not happy with "sorry, that information isn't available" with respect to the repairs. Is it paint? Did they run the thing into a dumpster like another poster here had happen? For what it's worth, I'm leasing, not buying. So I'll only have the car in my possession for 3 years. Nonetheless, given the cost, I feel like I'm entitled to more information that what I'm getting.

Would love to hear any thoughts or suggestions.

Don't worry about the $7500. You can adjust your Federal withholding to get the rebate whenever you want, technically.

I would be happy the factory has caught issues now as opposed to delivery and then spending time in the service center fixing things that you find. I, for one, have had my car for only 2 weeks and I've spent two days in at the service center fixing things that should have been caught at the factory, in my opinion. I would ping your DS periodically for updates and details on the progress.

I think I would want to know the nature of the "repairs". Is it fixing known defects such as taillight water leakage, sunroof, etc, or is it more significant such as body damage or battery problems. I think he should be able to get that info from the factory.

This happened to me too; mine was one of the first D's off of the line. It spent a month in "repairs" while other vehicles were happily being delivered.

I was nervous too but the car has been problem free.

If you need to know so you can sleep at night, call your DS and say: "If it's not too much trouble, please find out what repairs they'll be doing to my car so I can sleep at night." Once you know what those 'repairs' consist of, then you can make an informed decision.

I think it's great that Tesla is being somewhat forthcoming. While they may not be able to provide the actual specifics, they could have just as easily been even more vague than they have been. I wouldn't worry about it. Often there are component issues that get resolved in production. As long as what is delivered meets their and your standards, I wouldn't lose any sleep over this.

If your delivery specialist's manager works at the factory they should be able to get you the exact reason for the repairs. At this point (where your build has taken roughly 5x longer than usual) taking a few minutes and get you this info should not be a problem. There are a couple of bottlenecks in the factory and QC is one of them. With the end of the year push to meet their numbers I am sure they are scrambling. It's not an excuse, but might explain a bit of the delay.

They are starting builds tomorrow that are due to be delivered in 2015 so they are definitely able to work quickly :)

Yep, this is pretty much the story. I emailed my DS and said at this point, I just want some details. He finally put in the effort to call his manager, which is really all I wanted. Turned out it's being help up by a variety of QC issues, like one handle not extending at the same rate as the others. Nothing major. I'm perfectly happy now. Things happen, and in my case they are happening without my having to bring the car back to the service center on my own.

Do they work that into the lease or do you get to claim it yourself? I have a friend who is looking into leasing (or buying) but I don't know how the state rebate works with leasing.

BTW, sorry to hear about the delays. Mine is still many months away so I can't offer any advice.
I went ahead and checked the linked pdf that I always post for Colorado tax credit information and sure enough, it applies to leases as well. I never noticed it before since I'm not interested in leasing but thanks to your post, I've learned something new and will pass the information along to a friend who is looking to lease an inventory model.

Well, if it helps, you can rest assured that Tesla is going to go over that specific vehicle with a fine tooth comb after they repair whatever it is they are repairing. Perhaps you have even better odds of getting a "flawless" vehicle on day 1, than most of us (see my thread about my brand new MS having a pano roof issue with 1k miles on the odo for an example).

Interesting. My P85D does this; the passenger side handle extends about 1/2 to 1 second after the driver side. It's odd, and perhaps not what you would expect from such an expensive car, but it never bothered me enough to do something about it. I didn't realize it was a "thing".

I would insist on knowing exactly what they need to repair. If they wouldn't tell me, I would cancel and reorder, no matter how intensely painful that would be, and I can completely relate to not doing that in order to get the car. I had a situation similar to what you have described a long time ago. I didn't do what I just said and I regretted it terribly. Sold the piece of sh-t in a year and took a huge hit. I learned my lesson the hard and expensive way.

But boy oh boy, can I understand the "get it to me as fast as you can, I don't care".

So today, my partner got an email from his DS telling him: "I'm emailing to let you know that your Model S is moving through the factory smoothly and it's about half way completed. We should be seeing it finish up in the next few weeks."

He... was not pleased, as we ordered his literally at the exact same time we ordered mine (they're corporate leases) and the only difference is paint color, interior color, and trim. We both entered prod on 12/1, but I completed 12/8 and take delivery on 12/15. His window is still 12/16-12/31, but it's interesting that there can be such variances.

Yeah, I empathize with your partner. Apparently it's taking them weeks to "repair" my otherwise completed car, meanwhile, your car is built, shipped, and delivered in two weeks. You'd think at some point date of order would take precedence in the factory. Who knows.
