Gotta love this - I just stopped by http://money.cnn.com/ for my daily fix of business and investing news. The title article is: http://money.cnn.com/2013/05/13/autos/tesla-sales-bmw-mercedes-audi/index.html?iid=Lead Followed immediately by a block of 5 more articles in and around Tesla / Elon. Who needs an advertising budget when the news is taking care of that for you? Of course - they might recognize me as somebody that reads about Tesla obsessively, and have crafted their front page to appeal to me.
Okay, I guess if you call zero "limited", then I can buy into this tripe, but I guess that is the norm for those journalists following the typical auto makers who depend upon their network of sleazy dealers to hawk their wares.
Yep, this is amazing that a mass media outlet, CNN, picked this up (and ultimately many more just followed up on the story today, i.e. Jalopnik, etc.) - but the best part is that the idea for this -- the real scoop -- originated right here on the TMC blog: Tesla Model S - The #1 Brand in America - Blogs - Tesla Motors Club - Enthusiasts & Owners Forum
And it's even more hilarious, because they got the number of Tesla's sold wrong. I got no respect for CNN anymore. Kinda sad, I used to watch them almost exclusively
You people! Revel in the mass market and free publicity Tesla is receiving. Readers of the business press are going to be hard pressed to be ignorant of the existence of Tesla. Even if it should have been 4900 instead of 4750 - I think the point is clear. And I too hate how relative Y axes are now the norm instead of the exception. But - free positive press! Good for your long TSLA position! It's a good day
"Chart junk" is the term for this, coined by Ed Tufte something like thirty years ago. I recommend his books, starting with "The Visual Display of Quantitative Information": it's a much better read than the off-putting title would indicate.
Overall positive article regurgitating old news. But Peter just couldn't resist adding a little dig at the end (emphasis added): Completely unnecessary commentary from the author of the article. Awww, CNN, what happened to you? I remember when you used to just report the news.
Those in the know (here on TMC), know  Looking for benchmarks is definitely key... btw, I do like this new factoid that's been spreading through the media too: Tesla sold 4,900 of its Model S in the first quarter and expects to sell about 21,000 cars this year - or, as the Wall Street Journal noted, "four times the combined US sales of Maserati, Lamborghini, and Ferrari." Saw this intriguing factoid cited outside of WSJ in a few places (hoping more in the media pick up on this too); included here too: http://www.nasdaq.com/article/electric-cars-with-model-s-tesla-takes-the-lead-cm245747#ixzz2TGdKkaEz
