This is not directly to anyone in particular or a specific post/thread. As the Watch Sergeant on Hills Street Blues used to say, “Be careful out there”. Some of the comments posted here can be used against EV owners. After the newspaper article about no front plate, our comments and actions can be used by media folks to put a less than attractive spin on the real story.

I suspect we all know of stories where the media tells just enough of the truth and not all the truth and it can raise an eyebrow or the blood pressure of the readers that see as a privileged few because they don’t take advantage of a benefit that the state allowed.

The author of that article must have had too many MaiTais! Hawaiians enraged huh? Anyone seen only a Hawaiian upset over airport parking? Who does he think are using the parking spaces? We are Hawaiian citizens. Does the author think people from Maine, New York or Texas are driving in and parking at the HNL airport? And half the main airport parking building, another 1,000 parking spaces, are used by rental cars and denied access by the public. So if there is insufficient parking, then it’s the airport authority that allows rental cars to use that real estate instead of an offsite lot like many other cities do.

He must think that all those EVs are parked there for 3 months at a time. Most travelers go away for a week or two at most. So they park and return and drive away. Part of that 10% of total cars are airline and airport employees that are simply doing what the state law allowed - park at the airport. Yes, part of these spaces are probably used by airport employees not just travelers too.

Got my FIRST monitory EV perk yesterday @ the NBC parking lot! Pulled up, the attendant wrote down my plate number, and in we went Gosh it felt good to drive into that lot and keep the cash in my wallet.

Yes we know. Ohhhh, and you want us to tell you? Yes, it does - always at HCC. Not because of the FHB Auto Show, every event. Because its a city parking lot. Same rules. Put your name, phone and tag number on your ticket - then drive right out.

I was just wondering because I was unsure. Thanks!

One more problem with the "Hawaiians Enraged" article is that the percentage of EV ownership by people using the airport parking regularly is much higher than 1%. The incentive did what it was supposed to do and encouraged people to buy EVs because there are nice incentives offered in Hawaii for EV ownership. If 10% of the spots were filled with EVs, my guess is that the ownership ratio of people who benefit often from airport parking is about 10%. This particular incentive is about to go away, but guess what? Few of the people who often use EVs and park at the airport are going to give up their EVs for Ice vehicles now. It'd be interesting to check the airport parking before and after the drop dead date for long-term EV parking to see how many EVs remain. My guess is that it'll be a big argument as to how effective this incentive really has been, long term.

Maybe we should count EVs during our party at the airport with the coffee and donuts from Maui.

There hasn’t been any movement on SB657 for a couple weeks since it was deferred so bill likely dead for this session. So enjoy extended airport parking for one more year!

This is the question I am most interested in. Was the old bill set to expire this year some time? If not, we get a reprieve.

Question ,if I did bring my Tesla to park at HNL wouldn't the battery drain too far down after returning 3 weeks later not being plugged in? I read drain is up to 5 mi. Per day or so. ..

Unlikely unless you have done something to your car to cause more drain. Make sure you don't have external programs keeping it awake or ready to respond like Virtual Tesla or Teslafi. And checking it, such as checking the battery daily/routinely will wake it and add to the drain. Don't check in on it and wake it.

There will be drain. But based on what most people report about an S (I know you don't have an S), its more like 1-2 miles of loss.

Question, what is the daily drain now? Using your numbers, 3 weeks, 21 days worse case per your example 5 miles is what 100-105 miles? Charge it to 90-95% and drive to airport. Would you not have enough to get home anyway?

I suppose I would have enough to get back I have no external programs running. I could charge it to 100 I have to drive it back to Kapolei..I was just thinking worst case battery drain.
