I’m curious why I see so many posts about delays or timing of OTA updates (obviously bundled around when a new feature comes out, like rain sensing wipers or Ho Ho Ho mode).

I’ve had my X since June and track my firmware on Ev-fw.com and as of getting the rain sensing wipers an hour ago, I’ve had 10 updates since I got the car. I think one was done by the service center, but still I receive them on average more than once per month. I honestly think getting updates more often than that, where my car is unusable for an hour or two, would be annoying!

So it occurred to me...is it possible I’m the outlier and folks are complaining because they get updates much less frequently? I’d love to know so I can be more patient with those who ask or, alternatively, to scorch the earth with snarky forum comments if everyone is getting them about once per month. :)

I searched to see if a similar poll existed and didn’t find one on the first page of results, so I’m thinking any would have been some time ago. At least I hope so...search isn’t always my best friend.

Thanks!

Tesla is gathering A LOT of data about our cars, where we drive, how we drive, features we use.

I imagine they are targeting candidates for updates. Looking at the data available on Teslafi and EV-FW you can see the rate they push out these updates varies. Looks like 50.2 was pushed out over a few days quickly. 50.3 seems to be rolling out at a slower pace.

50.3 appears to be moving at almost as quick of pace especially considering how close it is to 50.2 timing. TeslaFI in past couple days was 216 and 232 for 2017.50.3 f3425a1 !!

They are up to > 40% of their 'fleet' already!

Software Version Count Percent
2017.50.3 f3425a1 497 40.3%
2017.50.2 3bd9f6d 631 51.2%

Not quite as fast.

According to EV-FW.

In 3 days 722 people updated to 50.2.
In 3 days 330 people updated to 50.3 or 46% as fast.

The problem with the numbers you quoted is that people who moved from to 50.3 likely subtracted from 50.2.

Indeed as I was talking about the percentage of their ~1200 car "fleet". Keep in mind the previous wide-spread update to their fleet was over 10 versions ago! (42) Thus I think that represented a lot of pent of desire so when people had the option for 50.2 they jumped at it quickly (i.e. your 3 day point). HTH explain my angle.

Given how anticipated the auto wiper feature is I kind of find it hard to believe people would let that feature just linger. I guess it could be slowed by AP1 customers not caring. From my understanding Tesla did a big push on 12/24 to get the easter egg out.

An interesting thing I noticed in the 1200ish fleet on TeslaFI is how
50.3 is only being pushed to AP 2/2.5 and
50.2 went to both AP 1 and AP 2/2.5 cars.

Software Version Count Percent
AP 2.5 2017.50.3 f3425a1 155 78.3%
AP 2.0 2017.50.3 f3425a1 443 84.7%
AP 2.5 2017.50.2 3bd9f6d 19 9.6%
AP 2.0 2017.50.2 3bd9f6d 47 9.0%

AP 1.0 2017.50.2 3bd9f6d 381 94.5%
