Assume it will bring more customers who wants to enable? $$$$ for Tesla

Absolutely, AP is $2,500 when ordered new and $3,000 when activated after delivery.

That launched earlier this week (old news :p )
Good way for them to make some extra cash though!

Yeah, with the exception of the development time needed to add this in, when someone tries and buys it's pure additional profit for Tesla. Very good idea.

Exactly... I always thought they were crazy to build in the AP tech by default... I guess it would cost too much to manufacture two variants (one w/ and one w/out)?

Yes, I think the extra hardware has a cost to Tesla of probably a few hundred extra bucks to maybe $1000 per car. However, you need the hardware for the standard safety features, first of all. Then, given that the majority of people buy it (I'm guessing), or will with a trial like this, the savings in streamlining the production line outweights the costs associated with making it optional.

This. Even if the first owner decides not to, there's a very good chance the second owner will pay to enable, giving Tesla their investment back. It avoids creating two classes of cars to confuse people with, and gives every car a window into the future through firmware upgrades.

Depending on how the car is set up, it may also give Tesla more fleet learning. It's entirely possible that even cars which didn't pay for AP software have AP running in the background on the hardware but not executing directions, comparing what the computer would have done with what the human did and flagging big discrepancies for Tesla to review and learn from...

Is anyone aware of how adding AP after the fact would work on a 3 year lease? The residual value and the lease can't be changed correct? Basically would the car be worth 3k more at the end of the lease?

I openly encourage any of you that have the capability to opt in for the 30 day trial, it will change your view of driving a state-of-the-art vehicle.

I'm guessing, like tinting Windows or new rims. It wouldn't change the lease terms at all.

Got the 30 day trial notice this morning. Pushed the accept button, screen said updating displays and then the car went dark. Both of us said "Oh crap" but only took about 1 minute. Only had it one day but liked it in heavy traffic.

I also received my notification this morning ...
AP would not install when driving, so I pulled over and downloaded the app!
