Something else to think about... The location of the forward-facing radar unit on the D precludes the option of mounting your front license plate down low where it looks a lot more pleasing. Wouldn't it be nice if Tesla could encourage a U.S. standard that eliminates the front plate for once and for all?

There must be a theoretical police/tracking benefit, since they could see what car it is from the front. But in practice, police and increasingly private businesses have automated license plate readers that just capture rear plates "automatically". I agree there's increasingly less need for front plates.

Yes, it's called having a reflective area for police to shoot their radar.

Not just cars with dual motors. All Models S coming out of the factory now have the front radar.

I didn't know that was the real benefit. They can't bounce their radar against the engine in the front :) Our cars could just write us a ticket via email when we speed :)

Moderators, this thread should be merged into: License Plate Placement with the ACC Sensor

There is nothing special about the D w.r.t license plate placement, just comes with the ACC sensor (like all cars since late September). So the other thread has a superior title and already has the answer.
