Front License Plates

They are required here, but the local service center doesn't mount the front plate holder at delivery until you tell them to. Delivery specialist made it clear that many people don't want it and they have had conflicts in the past when they made the holes without asking...

I told them to leave it off and bought torklift's "the law" drill-less mount.

For those MS owners living in a state requiring a front license plate, how many of you have become scofflaws and opted NOT to "muck" up your car with a front plate?
I have been to at least twenty different SuperChargers in California and Nevada, where front plates are required, and as a matter of curiosity always look for front plates. In my experience, about 1 of ten have front plate.

Mine is mounted via magnets behind the nose cone and only put on at LAX and at metered parking places in certain cash-strapped cities whose meter maids are significant sources of civic income. ;)

Can't do that in CA... it is delivered with a "front plate" and frame. See my avatar.
I'm sure you are joking because you probably know all S' delivered nationally have the frame and the goofy connectors making detachment a two beer job. And of course having once lived in California, I recall seeing at least half the CA cars with bare front bumpers. When I lived there I got busted for tint on front seat windows but I guess the fear of drive by shooters is more of a priority than a meaningless front plate.

I'm in Texas (front plate required). I guess I'm different, but the front plate has never bothered me. I don't see what the big deal is that so many people don't want it on there.

Plus, if you have vanity plates that are creative, having it on the front is a plus in my opinion.

And I don't get the idea of all the contraptions with magnets and clips so that the front plate is easily removable. Who is going to constantly take their front plate off and put it back on? That's way more trouble than it's worth. So you're going to self-park, stop, get out, car is going to automatically put itself in park, turn off, lock the doors, retract the handles -- do everything else for you, but you're going to manually go reattach your front plate? Kinda counter-productive if you ask me.

If you're worried about drilling into the nose cone affecting the resale value, a replacement nose cone is pretty cheap (< $300 if I remember correctly). Or use "the law" mount which isn't easily removable, but avoids drilling into the nose cone.

I suggest you search the Model S forums for the words "front plate" and you will find multiple threads and many hundreds of posts about whether or not to mount on. It has been endlessly debated...

I am pleased to have the new plate mount on the 2017 MS 90D. Tesla finally added some class to the license plate holder design and it gives the plain front end a touch of style. No more worries about fix-it tickets and the plate helps take the attention away from the excessive bugs that the flatter front seems to attract.

Ok, well I guess I am just too quick to listen to "rules". I am having my car PPF'ed right now, and I called them to make sure they are coating the front bumper whole so I can consider removing the front plate. That said, I agree that the 2017 plate is well done by Tesla.

On our late 2012 S P85, I never installed the front license plate (Texas). In the first year, I was pulled over twice for warnings, though I suspect both times the officers were only using that as an excuse to get a closer look at the Model S (VIN 3xxx - there weren't many in Texas at that time).

One issue we've had with the P85 is the windshield EZ Tag - the tag is often missed by the automatic highway scanners, and I frequently get reports that the system has to fall back on license plate detection when on the toll tag highways.

For our new S 100D, decided to use a front license plate, and eliminate the constant concern of being pulled over for a missing plate - plus it allowed me to add a license plate toll tag - which should eliminate the toll tag sensor issues with the windshield tag on our P85.

After having it for a few weeks now, I've gotten used to the front plate, and don't think it's a big deal to have it - especially since it solves the toll tag problem.

California scofflaw here......

After perfecting the art of removing the front plate/bracket for my S and that of several of my friends, I arrived to my X delivery proudly with my pliers, goo gone and paper towels in hand. To my surprise, it had no front plate/bracket.

I was :D and my regional sales manager said...."we just couldn't put you through doing it yourself again".

So, there are some risk takers among the Tesla staff. He's trusting I don't throw him under the bus, and I'm trusting an auto company that has repeatedly done everything possible to deliver me a great experience.....even when things didn't go well the first time.

I live in SoCal and recently took delivery of my MS75 that had the front mounting bracket already installed by the SC.

Following the advice found on the forum, I used 90 defree pliers and a hair dryer... total process took 5 minutes.

Unfortunately, upon close inspection, I noticed that they creased my bumper when they initially installed the bracket.... now I have to decide if it’s better to drive with the frame to hide the mark.
