Game Controller - Cuphead

Posting in a few places to hopefully save some people some time. I looked online for a cheap controller to keep in the car. I've found the Hyperkin X91 Xbox One & Windows 10 controller ($16) works fine on my Xbox but doesn't work at all in the car.

After reading some forums, watching a few youtube videos and reading Amazon reviews, I'm pretty sure the EasySMX PC Game Controller will work with all games in the Tesla that use a controller. I just ordered it and will update this post if I have any issues with it.

I happen to have the iBuffalo SNES classic USB controller ($17) which also works with Cuphead.

If you don't care for quality, Amazon has plenty of USB controllers that cost around $10 for 2. All the controllers that works with arcade emulators will very likely work in the Model 3.
I tried one of those cheapie USB controllers from a RetroPi set up I had. It didn't work.

Did you have to do anything special to get it to work? I've tried with my PS4 controllers and no dice. It wouldn't even recognize it to the point of showing the "Play" button.

I've also tried my PS3 controllers, same problem.

I've tried them wired each time.

I have another "generic" controller (Nostromo) that works with pretty much everything except Cuphead. Cuphead has a weird behavior: it accepts the "X" button (the bottom one on the right hand side - I'm calling it X because that's what it is labeled on playstation controllers), but the left joystick is inverted (up goes down and vice versa). Then I can get to the "Options" menu and "Controls" by using the inverted scheme, but once I get there, I cannot navigate anymore to assign any button.

Grrrrr...
Did you try resetting it by pushing the little button on the back of the controller? I’ve read that it can’t be paired to a PS4 console when you plug it into the car.

+1 to this one, of the games I tried it seems to work perfectly (good controller mappings) in beach buggy, cuphead, and lunar lander.

For $25 went ahead and ordered one. I've been using my old Xbox 360 wired controller and it constantly drops connection and glitches out. Gonna try this, hopefully it works, if now, I don't wanna make a service appointment for something so trivial.

Can you post some pics showing your set up?

So here is what I used to complete this install ...

- Anker USB Hub (I had this lying around)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00IJ331WY/
- Mayflash MAGIC-NS Wireless Controller Adapter
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B079B5KHWQ/
- Aikenuo USB 6-port charger
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0779D7DFG/
- 12V Power Cable - 4 foot (5.5x2.1mm connector)
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0746GPQH3/
- Barrel adapter - 5.5x2.1mm to 6.3x3.0mm right-angle
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07L5GB34N/

I began with ordering the Aikenuo charger, but then realized the included power cable is a little too short and the jacket is a little too thick for my liking. I searched for a 4-foot cable with 6.3x3.0 connector (what is on the Aikenuo) - but best I could find was a 4-foot cable + barrel adapter. (See links above)

I decided to stick with the Aikenuo since it had very good reviews, and feels extremely high quality. It just needs a better cable. (I wrote to Aikenuo and received a reply that a new cable will be available in the November timeframe.)

For install - I began by watching the "wire routing instructions" on this video:
-

It's quite simple; remove the drivers' side trim, remove the 6 screws holding the metal trim in place, remove the small rubber grommet, and then I drilled a small hole through the side of the console to pass the wire through.

I then ran the 12V Power Cable above from the power port, through the drivers' side wall of the console, and then passed the barrel connector through the hole I drilled.

I then mounted the Aikenuo charger on the underside of the phone charger door. Plugged the barrel adapter into the Aikenuo, and then the 12V cable into it. Wala - 6 ports of high power USB in the front compartment. (You'll see the two cables from the Nomad wireless charging pad plugged into the Aikenuo. I also use an Echo Auto, but unplugged it for the photo since it just got in the way.)

That frees up the 2 front USB ports - one I use for the Anker USB hub, with two MAGIC-NS wireless game controller adapters. The other port is for my USB flash drive. I happened to have the Transcend Jetflash drive lying around, so I used that. Could be almost any USB stick.

Let me know if you have any questions - but it's working GREAT!
