Previously, gas stations used the rubber nozzle cover to help meet air quality standards. Today, however, the vapor-capturing fuel pumps are redundant because over 70 percent of cars on the road are already equipped with on-board systems that capture similar pollutants—not to mention, they're costly for gasoline station owners. According to the EPA, 31,000 gas stations will be affected, saving them around $3,000 each once the ruling falls into place. The White House hopes the move will help consumers and businesses save almost $6 billion over the next five years.

Even the camera doesn't look like it's at a safe distance to me. "Fire and gas station" in the same sentence means I move away quickly.

Shush. That's Harris Ranch - they've had an HPC there for Roadster owners and now a supercharger. Good people. (And good steaks at the restaurant across the street, if you're not a vegetarian. Well good steaks even if you are.)

Sheesh, those ICE cars are dangerous!

Mercedes is recalling 432 2013 SL-Class vehicles manufactured from Dec. 19, 2011, through May 31, 2012, because an air-conditioning line can rupture in a crash.

If it ruptured in a severe frontal crash, the refrigerant gas in the line could be released in the engine compartment and catch on fire. To fix the problem, Mercedes plans not only plans to switch out the refrigerant lines, but will move to a new kind of refrigerant as well.

The AC refrigerant in use for decades was R134a. Still in use in most cars today. Due to severe GHG effect, the car industry agreed to replace it with R1234yf which is inflammable and produces highly toxic products when burning. Daimler announced to quit from that consensus in September 2012 (German article here: Daimler schert aus Industrie-Vereinbarung für neues Kältemittel aus - SPIEGEL ONLINE). They're going back to R134a.

The best refrigerant would be R744 (CO2) but it drives up cost for an AC unit. And cost increases are something the car industry is very unwilling to accept.

Edit: the BMW recall is for M5 and M6 models where the oil pump can fail, risking engine failure. This was already mentioned in the M5 thread.
