Gen 3 Wall Connector 3 red blinks fault code

I called the number and today and spoke with a gentlemen there.

I have multiple issues with my gen 3. First being the same as all of you with the reduced charging rate due to overheating. Second being my unit has a WiFi issue. I can’t even connect to the built in WiFi for commissioning.

They said to me that they have confirmed that the first batch of chargers had a manufacturing defect causing a faulty sensor issue. I did mention to him that these issues did seem to start after moving past the .20 train and onto .24 and now .28 trains.

he said that is not the first time he has heard that and is going to escalate it up to see if it’s more than an faulty sensor we all seem to think.

I am going to be getting my charger replaced hopefully in a week or so.

I’ll update more as things progress.

Thanks for the heads up JONBOYTMY, let's all post anything anyone of us finds out.

I just got off the phone with Tesla. At first, they tried to tell me it was normal for the charger to do this. To keep from overheating. I pushed a little and they had engineers pull the logs. They said it is showing 92 degrees and will not go over 12 a.

So, they are sending me a new charger. He also said it is a known problem with the 3rd gen wall charger.

I'd love if mine ran at 92 F. I'm dealing with 110-111! o_O

I have the same problem with three red blinks. My Gen 3 wall charger was installed about a month ago. After 15 minutes of charging the amperage drops from 48 to 24 amps. It has done this at least two days in a row but I suspect it has been doing this for a couple of weeks. I just got off the phone with a Tesla specialist and he indicated that there is a defect in the some of the chargers and has put me on a list to be shipped one as soon as they are back in stock. The specialist did look at my charger over the internet and it did have the latest firmware (0.8.58+g2f475f6c93fd79). The whole phone call lasted less than 15 minutes. Also, he said I may receive an email saying to ship the defective charger back before I receive the new one. He indicated that is not the case. Just keep the defective charger until I receive the new charger. The new charger will have instructions one where to ship the defective charger once it is replaced.

Thanks for the heads up Cact613, if you hear anything else please let us know

I also want to suggest that even you don’t suspect you have this problem, watch the charger during charging to see if the three flashes occur, or watch the app to see if the charging rate is being reduced at some point, or watch the display in the car to see if the charging rate is lower after a shot period of time. If you don’t look at any of these items, you may not know you even have the problem as the battery will probably be charged completely by morning even at the lower rate. In addition, no alerts are generated on my app or on the car display. Without looking at the these items, I would had no idea that a problem existed. My gen 3 wall charger seems to be warmer on the left side but the charging cable is just barely warmer than ambient temperature, i strongly suggest that everyone with a Gen 3 charger go to the trouble to see if you have a problem. If you don’t, then when you do need to charge in in a hurry, the ability may not be there.

I had the first occurrence of a 3 blinking fault last night. I have charge complete notifications turned on, as I'm tracking how long it takes to charge out of curiosity. This morning, I didn't have the notification, so i checked in the app. it was still charging, at 7 amps, went into the garage and the 3 red blinking was happening. it wasn't warm, i stopped charge, and restarted it and it ramped back up to 48 amps and spent the next hour charging at that rate to finish. I've charged without issue almost nightly with it for about the last month. Funny thing is it was only 60's in the garage, and it had been over 100 and was charging fine. I'm curious how tonight will go.

If I saw the charger blinking 6 times, but works fine and goes green after pressing the button to plug it in, is this something to be concerned with? It is a very recent install and was unplugged when I found it blinking red.

since the update to .58 it's dialing back from 48A to 24A, so your app / phone will display any notifications. I believe the previous version, .4, it would shut off the charger and that's when a notification occurred. This probably explains you, myself and others aren't getting those phone notifications that charging has stopped.

well, I believe it slowed way down again last night. It took 6 hours to charge 18% (from 52-70%). Doesn't normally take that long at all. I'm going to try and contact support and see what they say. Its just weird that it worked just fine in 100 degree weather, and now its 60's at night and its over heating

Another data point. I had the 3 red flashes a couple weeks ago and they pushed out an update. It was running fine until about 2 days ago where when I noticed the reduced current and longer charge overnight.

called them up this morning. they checked my old case/inquiry and are sending me a replacement in 1-4 weeks depending on what logs they can get off my car. They told me I can use the charger until I get a replacement. Will have to return it once I get the new one.

I'm also getting a replacement. As far as car firmware, it didn't happen to me until i had 28.5, so I'm not sure if it is car related or not. The guy on the phone said he thinks they are working on a brand new firmware for the charger as that might actually be the root cause of it, but until they comes out they are going to keep replacing them as they think that could be it too. Either way, i'm glad its not just me and it seems to be a mass issue with the charger. i will say, the unit is warm, but not hot when it kicks to overhead protection. So it might just be firmware and not something physically wrong with them.

Ill chime in now after following thread from start

I recently bought a maxed out Model X in May (love it,...waited 10 years to finally get electric car...pearl white with black 22 inch rims,...I call it "The Orca")...and purchased the gen 3 wall connector.

The HPWC ran great the first month until the down amps to 24A after 45 mins, then down to 6 A. followed by charging interrupted alert on the tesla app. The unit was hot to the touch but I figured maybe that could be normal, so I monitored the situation and only charged during the day so I could unplug.

I then noticed the 3 red light blinks indicating overheating. hmmm....it does feel warm....hardware issue I guess but for the down amps at 45 minutes each time??? maybe firmware.

Every charge would result in same issue so I contacted Tesla support. I figured since the unit originally functioned fine except for the warmth and the down-amps would occur after 45 mins that it was a firmware issue. They analysed the hardware, and checked the car logs and said they would send a new unit.

The sucker showed up less then a day later via Fedex. Not bad! Easy hookup and I sent back the original unit. Now it worked fine the first few charges so I figured instead of going offline so I wouldnt deal with any firmware issues , I would hook up to wifi and let the firmware upgrade,...that way I would find out if it was a firmware problem.

Once again, down amps to 24 A with the 3 red blinks while still charging. The firmware was the latest. I felt the face plate again....this sucker was hot! I couldnt understand it....tesla? space ships? best cars made ? stock rocking....whats up with the wall connector?

I called up support again,...always a nice person,...and we reviewed the issues. Bottom line, there is a defect causing the overheating of the unit, some kind of "pinhole". But the first replacement they sent me a unit that didn't have that fixed.

So they will send me a new unit that they say will have the hardware fix and we will give it a go again.

So, bottom line....its a hardware defect.

Rob from Long Island and very happy with the support

Okay - odd thing. I was told the 0.8.58 FW was flashed from my original 0.8.54 but today on the phone, the WC team said it looks like it is still on .54 - I doubt that because now it ramps down to 24amps instead of staying at 48amps and over heating...

They are apparently 're-pushing' the FW update to 0.8.58.... will let you know what happens later today.
