General "Should I Wait for Upgrades" Thread

Want to pull the trigger on a White/White LR w Inductions.

Dreading the idea that the upgrades/changes made to the 2021 M3 will be incorporated into the MY soon after I take delivery, namely new battery, center console, usb in glove, heated steering wheel, not to mention single casting and so on.

Tesla website says 3-7 weeks for delivery so there's a chance delivery could be pretty quick. I know there's A LOT of speculation about when the MY will receive these upgrades sooner or later.

Any new info would be appreciated. TIA!

Yep, it's the same with all technology: cell phones, computers, now cars. Waiting will always yield something better. If you need a car, you can't wait. I suggest that once you buy something, you stop wondering if it was a good decision or not. Do your homework, choose what's best for your needs at the moment. If what you need is literally right around the corner, guaranteed, maybe you wait a few weeks. Otherwise, go for it but don't look back too much. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say. If you torture yourself with that, you'll never be happy.

This is not to say you should buy without doing your homework though :D

None of the upgrades to the Model 3 are going to make any significant value difference in the Model Y after you own it for a few years. Unless you can't imagine owning a car with the center console design like the Model 3 is getting (which has zero evidence of coming to the Model Y as of this writing) then I would just purchase now. As we crested the 2020 -> 2021 model year hump, THAT was a reason to wait since it can impact resale value.

There will always be new advancements. If you wait now, you could theoretically always be waiting for the next thing. Most of these changes are minor in nature.

Moral of the story: I will take the ownership experience any day. I am about to get in my Tesla right now and enjoy running the errands I have today in it. The delta in value of ownership over non-ownership is most impactful to you personally.

I felt the same way. Decided to pull the trigger and ordered in early October. We unexpectedly received a 2021 model. It arrived near the end of that month. You can always wait for better technology. But as I am getting older, my decision was to buy now, enjoy the latest and upgrade in a few years if necessary or desired.

I think you should just get the car when you want it. Don't overthink - that said, if the console upgrade and other features recently introduced to the M3 are key for you, then wait. I think mid-2021 should be a good time to get it if that's important. Bear in mind, too, the increasing cost of FSD...now $10K...I got my FSD for $7K...as my delivery specialist said to do it at purchase because it was soon going to $8K...and it did.

I think the biggest reason why there are so many question marks about whether to wait for upgrades or purchase now is also the biggest frustration people have with Tesla compared to other Tech and car companies. Tesla doesn't give any information about when, where, or what the upgrades will be, making it very hard for the consumer to make decisions.

With the iphone, you know the new iphone is going to come out around September. You know there will be some upgrades even if you don't know the extent of what they will be. You know that you will be able to get the old version at a reduced price. So, you can decide whether to hold off on getting a new phone depending on a lot of known factors.

With other car companies, you know what the new model year changes will be well in advance of the model year. You know what the prices will be and you can generally gauge the demand/price of the older models based on the proposed upgrades. For example, BMW announced an increase to the battery size of the next model PHEV X5. So, you can easily decide if that is an important factor in waiting for it to come out or to purchase the current PHEV X5.

With Tesla, you could purchase the car today and in two weeks it could be completely redesigned; the price could be more; the price could be a lot less; the car could be completely gone. I think one of the only things Tesla has given a heads up about is increases in the FSD price; but, even then they don't really tell you what the improvements are. There is a lot of shooting into the dark when it comes to Tesla.

For me, I'm waiting for the following:
- 4680 cells / structural pack
- front-rear single casting
- 7-seat option
- laminated acoustic glass

Am somewhat hopeful this will all be available in 2021 but getting that and then potentially Cybertruck so close together has me hesitant. I have the CT tri-motor with FSD on order and I plan on getting that fully loaded. If Plaid CT is an additional option, I would want that upgrade too.

I've been following the Y since July (give or take) almost every week, no greater than two weeks, there is a new rumor of upcoming changes.

At some point you just have to jump in and buy. Unless your ownership experience will be highly degraded by one of the never-ending upcoming rumored features. Keep in mind, some things will be able to be retrofitted into your car, but this isn't an absolute for every future change.

We tried to buy in July/August but the car they presented us on 01 August looked like a toddler had assembled it. Sure, body lines can be fixed but it had a dented quarter panel, a busted taillight, a big scratch on the other quarter panel and no less than 5 fish-eyes on the frunk. Offering to repaint a new car wasn't a solution we were willing to accept so we have since been on hold to re-VIN match until 01/01/2021.

I've itched off and on to go ahead and VIN match early but I'm going to continue to hold out. I sold my car in late June to Carvana and we've been doing OK sharing one car but every now and then it becomes a bit of a hassle. I don't really care about the center console but I would like to have the rumored heated wheel, 5g connectivity, a black headliner and the 82kW battery. I think we will see the battery by January when I VIN-match and there is no guarantee I will VIN match in January, could be later in the quarter. Maybe we will see 5g connectivity by then as well. The wheel and headliner will hopefully be retrofit-able if they are not out at that point.

I'm only holding out to order in late January because I don't really want to get a new car in the dead of winter. If it has the new center console (which I much prefer over the current one), great. Nothing is really a deal-killer for me. New battery tech won't be here until S/X/CT get it (IMHO). Single body casting doesn't really matter to me. Heated wheel would be nice, but my current ride doesn't have it so no great loss.

I suspect IF the center console, and USB in glove box are coming those changes won't happen for another 2-3 months. The battery change even longer. Laminated front glass is already here on the Model Y. For me I will be taking delivery this week and would have liked the console changes, but will just settle for wrapping my own console myself.

**UPDATE** someone just posted that their 74xxx VIN MY they got this week has Auto diming Mirrors!
