German Government Votes to Ban Internal Combustion Engines by 2030

Members of the German government have just passed a resolution to ban the sale of internal combustion engines in the European Union by 2030. Only zero-emissions vehicles would be allowed on the market after that time, according to the resolution.

Sounds good! Norway already filed it. Ireland is thinking about it and a vote didn't make it here in NL ( ).

Thanks for posting that link Doug. That is great news. Another signal that ICE vehicles are on their way out.

I note that this German government action is just a "resolution" at this point, it is not a law or regulation but a request that the EU Commission take that action.

...and it's just one of the government chambers (Bundesrat) that voted for it. The government (Bundesregierung) nor the main chamber (Bundestag) have supported that resolution, unfortunately. Current conservative government is not a big supporter of EVs. They try to prolong the life of ICE technology for as long as they can. And that won't change unless the Green Party comes to power in autumn (national elections to the Bundestag (thus Bundesregierung/chancellor).

This will never happen, because Germany is not a democracy - it is a lobbycracy.

The german politicians only care which industry is giving them the highest "donations" and the best 7-digit salary post-politics jobs.

A tiny spark of hope: Thanks to pressure from the EU, from 2018 on at least in one german town, Stuttgart, older non-commercial diesel cars (about 70% of all diesel cars) will be banned from the city for a couple of days - per year. Yes, a couple days per year... well, one has to start somewhere.

Needless to say, the german transportation minister Dobrindt hates this, because a couple tenthousand german people dying of diesel dust and NOx is insignificant to the return on investment a handful of investors can make from diesel engines...

If the CO2 balance flips by 2030 then, who knows, cherry trees may fail to blossom and wheat be rationed such that mere desserts be a thing of the past.
