Tesla probably wanted to push the Texas test drives as far back they could due to the insane heat in that part of the world (during summer). Texas test drivers will really be able to test the A/C on the Model S.
Doesn't this have everything to do with Texas laws requiring a dealership middleman between the manufacturer and the consumer?
July vs August in Texas not too much different. Really hot vs. really really hot but glad they're coming to Texas. Big market to leave out and they have a store here. They also have a new blog post saying there are some minor changes to the production version including that tiny shelf below the screen as standard.
Yes, it would be interesting to see what changed with regard to the Texas events. My guess is they got some type of written confirmation from the state telling them they were okay. However, the 'rent for 8 minutes for $0.10' workaround would have been funny. That is how a number of the home improvement shows get around gift taxes. Apparently there is no rule against improving a property you are renting, so they official rent for the duration of the improvement. Still, a rental option, while likely legal, could antagonize regulators. Official blessing is always nicer if you can get it. Such creative workarounds shows just how silly the antiquated rules are, though.
