We are P957, and so we have yet to receive an invite for the first test drive date. As we are in Texas, I'm hopeful that they will smooth the reservation process out after this initial run so that there is enough time to purchase reasonable airfare for a future test drive date. I'm hoping to make a weekend trip with my wife, but it would be nice to be able to plan it.

With test drive registrations underway, I was hoping to get some details on the process. The current test drive thread is getting a little unwieldy, and it is focused on the receipt of emails, so this seems like a good thread to start.

I guess my main question is whether there is a choice at sign-up regarding the performance option? I really wish that I could get a comparative test drive between the two versions, as we are still on the fence regarding the performance upgrade.

The second question is how many time slots are available, and can you tell how many spaces per time slot? Are they scheduled hourly? My vision is they will have a group of 10 cars and 10 Tesla reps with ten groups taken in for a briefing along with a chance to look over the 10 vehicles. After the briefing and tour of colors and interiors, they start the 10 rides in pretty rapid fire order (maybe a minute or two apart). Kind of like a time-trial in a bike race. Perhaps the aggressive drivers can even make a pass. :) Obviously, this is just a guess by me. If they have 20 vehicles available, they could do a similar structure with twice the number of drives.

Any other details revealed in the email or the registration process?

    Thanks in advance.

    Andy

Got mine but can't go...here are the details:

It's time for you to drive Model S! Our Get Amped Model S Tour is coming to Fremont, California and we are very excited to get you behind the wheel. We will have all 10 Model S exterior colors on display at this event. It is a beautiful sight to see!

Invitations to test drive have been prioritized by Reservation Sequence Number. Time slots will fill up quickly. Don't miss your opportunity to be a part of this amazing event.

Your driving session will be 7-8 minutes long over a predetermined route designed to highlight the capabilities of Model S.
Reservation holders will be limited to one test drive during the event.
A Tesla Product Specialist will accompany all drives to answer questions and ensure you optimize your time in Model S.
You may bring up to three guests to ride in the back seat during your drive.
Please arrive 30 minutes prior to your appointment time to check-in and receive a brief, but very informative pre-drive overview.
Can't make it to Fremont? Check out our Get Amped Model S Tour page for future tour stops. You will continue to receive test drive invitations until you've had your chance to rock the road.

They ask you to arrive 30 min early, but I wonder if you can hang out there all day long?

I'm wondering that too... or at least if they'll be letting people peek at the factory like they did back in October. I missed that event.

Now that they're actually making cars, I'm thinking any factory viewing, if available, will be less intimate than October was, but it's still cool to gawk at factory robots.

It'll be cool if they let visitors atleast see the view from the "bridge":

Tesla Motors prepares for June 22 launch of Tesla S all-electric sedan

I don't think folks would be rushed out; after our beta test rides back in October, taking the factory tour apart (probably not an option this time), we were able to hang out outside in an elevated viewing area (with hors d'oeuvres and such) looking at others taking the rides.

Slightly OT but did anyone notice that the picture in the invite is of a configuration that isn't offered? Looks to be Dolphin Grey with white interior-- no way to order such an animal! Anyway... I've been told that there is no opportunity to pick which color you'll drive or even Perf vs regular. They assume almost everybody (at least at first) wants to drive at least the Perf and they're not going to have enough to make that possible. So basically they said you get what you get.

Wrong. That's a Starlight Silver with Sig White interior...and it's available to you.

Event attendees are to receive an email 3-4 days before with more details. So I would start looking for that on Wednesday. It's not far away and, besides, we should have LOTS to talk about tomorrow!

I suppose if you wanted to get picky, you could point out that the white interior isn't available without the matching white parcel shelf. Because the parcel shelf is included with the Signature which is the only way to get a white interior, and there is not parcel shelf shown in the images.

Maybe it is in the frunk.

if flying southwest is an option, you can buy tickets with assumption you are going at advanced booking prices. Then cancel/change them if needed later. They don't charge penalties and you can always apply the full amount credit to the other/another ticket.

It's what I do for any other trips. If I think I might go, buy the best priced ticket I can find on southwest. If the plans change or the fare drops, rebook and apply the funds from the first ticket or keep the difference as credit for a future flight.

I have a Sunday drive scheduled. It'd be great if Saturday drivers would report back so that us Sundayers would better know what to expect. (eg, any Factory tours?)

Is the test drive actually at the Freemont factory? Does anyone know the route?

Some people seemed to have assumed that it will be on the factory test track, but AFAIK there's been no official announcement yet. Tesla has said that more details will follow a few days before the event. If it's on public roads there's nothing to stop locals just standing on the sidewalk to watch (though I guess there's no sidewalk on the I-880....).

Edit: I stand corrected by *Spenny818* below.

From the second Inside Tesla blog post, "On June 23rd and 24th, we will launch the Get Amped Model S Tour at our own Tesla Factory in Fremont, California. Franz von Holzhausen, our chief designer, has created a great seven to eight minute test drive course that extends beyond the factory to nearby streets. The course offers a variety of experiences that include freeway driving, long sweepers, tight turns, smooth and rough roads, and general urban driving. It’s the perfect way to experience how Model S grips the road and loves to run."

In the very fine print: don't speed, watch out for cops cause the cops will be looking for all these crazed out-of-towners. :scared:

Thanks for posting that, gjamrok! This clarifies something I wondered about in another thread--do you really get e-mails forever until you either test drive or all events are over. I guess so. ;-) (Someone probably answered me over there.)

    Received this disappointing email today:
That's too bad :(. Wife will have to stay behind with the kids while I drive. She doesn't care so much - "ride in the back? done that".
Others with kids under 8 (GG, ddenboer, transl8r, etc) were you planning on having the kids along for the ride?

Yeah, it's a shame :( I had resigned to the fact that my son wouldn't be able to ride and my mother-in-law graciously offered to babysit while my wife and father-in-law accompany me...

I know finding a sitter may not be easy or convenient but, your wife may still have other compelling things to look forward to at the event?! All the colors, the final interiors and such?!

That REALLY sucks. I have three kids, and was hoping to have two of them sit in the third row. If there's no third row option in the test cars (still waiting for a reply from my rep, waiting a week now!!!) then I expect to use belt positioners for the two little ones.
