Not really sure on the source as the article references an announcement but apparently Gigafactory #2 might be in South Africa.

It seems like a good location to build Tesla Energy products. The market in Africa will be substatial as there is a lot of offgrid solar potential.

IMO, Tesla needs Gigafactories on every continent. Demand for Tesla Energy products can pave the way even before many Tesla vehicles are sold in a continent. Indeed in areas where grid access is limited, Tesla needs to pave the way to electric vehicles first by electrifying the region. Leapfrogging the grid with solar and batteries is sufficient to support battery electric transport as well. It is a long process, which is why now is the time to begin.

Batteries to support solar power is a great application in Africa. Manufacture on the continent avoids tariffs in many countries.
