An impact that creates a fold in the rear quarter panel totals most vehicles. That is often true even with a newer, more expensive vehicle because the used parts are worth more.
If the rear casting is extensively welded, it will make the vehicle less repairable for the marginal case where it is damaged but the vehicle could otherwise be economically repaired. If it is largely bolted in place, it might make the vehicle more economically repaired.
Front and side collisions are much more common than rear collisions. If the rear casting is removable, there will eventually be plentiful supply of used parts. With the simple bolt-in, plug-in, connection of the rear motor module, it might be a faster, simpler structural repair than with traditional construction. (The finish bodywork and paint is a different story.)
