This article suggests GM is just replying to the shift in the market towards light trucks:

But the market always shifts faster than the companies can adopt. They need a flexible assembly line that can assemble any car/light truck with a week's of reconfiguration.
I think the ELR was Tesla's first victim, TBH. (GM actually claimed it would compete with the Model S.)
