It's not April 1 so I assume that this is serious:

Google patents 'sticky' layer to protect pedestrians in self-driving car accidents

The idea seems to be to put a sticky layer on the front of the car so a pedestrian would stick to the car when they were hit and not bounce off and incur further injuries.

Sounds like they're not overly confident about their cars' ability to not hit pedestrians in the first place.
