Hardwiring a Radar Detector - 2022 M3P

Has anyone recently hardwired a radar detector in a 2022 M3P? What source did you use for 12v switched power. An installer that I contacted told me that a recent firmware update turned some of the switched sources to constant on sources. He was going to do some more research for me, but I thought I'd ask here. Thanks in advance.

I did the hardwiring myself 2 months ago on my 2022 M3P without FSD, the 12V power (more like 15V as measured by a multimeter, doesn't matter) I am tapping into is the same as in this video:

Running the latest software version right now (2022.20.6) it still works as intended: sit in the car, step on the brake paddle the radar detector turns on immediately. Leave the car the radar will turn off in 30-60 secs.

To me, what the installer told you is more like an excuse for their lack of experience, as this wire is what most people use for 12V hardwiring.

Using this 12v switched wire in the pass anger foot panel did not work for me. Any suggestions? 2022 M3P.
Make sure you are tapping into the right wire, the radar detector still works perfectly for me, it should work for you as well unless they changed wiring during the same model year. I remember there was an orange wire that looked like a red wire, I almost made the mistake by tapping into that wire instead of a red wire. Also I suggest you to cut off the sleeving a little by a knife before tapping, instead of just tapping the wire with force, you might pinch the wire instead of cutting thru the sleeve.

Do you have any pictures. I tried both of the smaller 18ga red wires (one was more dull). There are 3 bigger (14ga ish) wires I didnt try.

Did you watch the video posted above? I did it Sunday but I didn’t take pics, the wire was exactly where the video showed, I didn’t even use a multimeter lol, but yea worked great, your sitting in the drivers side with foot on brake pedal to test right?

It still works. The wire tap that came in the kit was loose on the wire and wasn't making a good connection. Used a different wire tap and had no issues. Thanks for the help.

Confirming this worked, 2023 M3P.
In that tucked-behind harness, there are two red wires (both are very thin). One is a pale red (almost pink), the other is bright red. I went with the bright red one. I used the $25 Escort hardwire kit which comes with a wire tap included.
Power from that wire comes on when the car is in “ignition”, i.e. you have pressed the brake pedal and the gear selector is ready.

I recall that pink wire too, but as soon as I saw the real red wire I quickly knew which one I should use.

I would recommend tapping power from the 12v cigarette-lighter adapter power plug. Some service centers are looking for excuses to deny warranty on electrical related issues and at least the CLA was designed specifically to power 12v accessories so harder for them to argue. I received a lot of pushback on side repeater camera issues and one of the things they pointed to was me using VC right to power something. After a lot of arguing, the service advisor admitted it was likely unrelated but said Tesla can deny warranty.

What cigarette adapter?

Is that switched power, or constant on?
I was just looking to use that center console cigarette 12v as well, vs splicing or hard wiring. But I kept hearing that that 12v was a constant on, and would drain the battery while car is parked because the camera ended up being on the whole time.
Switched power. It stays active after you leave the car but after a few minutes, power shuts off. Perfect for radar. 5 years later and no issues.
