I have 7 more days to decide and would appreciate the input from our local group. I realize that this has been discussed before, but curious as to whether any of you have had any thoughts after having the car awhile. I anticipate that I will be a low mileage driver, 5,000-6,000 miles per year. I have several "failed roads" in my neighborhood that I do my best to avoid. nanimac posted this link previously of what is included in the annual service: Model S Annual Service Checklist. It doesn't look like much, but the plans do include annual wheel alignment, rotation each 6,000 mi or 6 months and in years 5 - 8, extends the period of free roadside assistance. Note that there is a one time free rotation at 6,000 mi or 6 months that comes with the base purchase of the car, independent of whether you have a service plan.
One potentially valuable benefit would be wheel alignment. I used to realign my old car annually because I have bad roads and my old car wasn't very good. How frequently did you align yours?
I considered taking it in for service every 2 years at $600/visit. If I had to realign it in between, that might cost about $90, but I've been told that different specialists may align the vehicle differently. Barry said that it wouldn't be good if Tesla had to undo someone else's work. If I brought it to Tesla without a service plan, Barry said about 1.5 hrs x $150/hr = $225 for alignment. Not sure how much a shop would charge to rotate the factory tires. If done at Tesla, it would probably be at least 1/2 hr = $75. When I am on my second set, the tire shop should be able to rotate them. So first 4 years would cost ($225 + $75) + $600 + ($225 + $75) +$600 = $1900, same as the cost for the 4 yr service plan.
If I get the plus 4 package for years 5 - 8, the inclusion of roadside assistance would save having to add me to my wife's AAA membership. I am currently in favor of getting the 4 + 4 yr plan. I realize that not everyone would keep their car as long as I intend to. Would appreciate your thoughts and advice. Thanks.
