Nanimac and others awaiting your Teslas this week...

I would imagine that the shipload of Teslas that arrived this week will be at the SC today or Wednesday. The next step is the mandatory detailing. That may take place or Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. After that, the cars can be turned over to sales and you could get a "Your Tesla is ready for pickup" call. Even if you plan to get your Tesla detailed during a Glare application, you still need to get the detailing at the SC (I know because I asked).

If you want 20/20 or a similar company to apply Glare, I suggest getting two or more owners together and asking for a group discount. The truth of the matter is that prepping the car for the glare application is the real work, and a brand new Tesla is a snap to prep. Less work needed by the detail shop translates into more bargaining opportunities for you.

Looking forward to hearing stories from the new owners and seeing photos too. The Model S will really dazzle you, and the feeling grows stronger as you get to know the vehicle and gain proficiency in all the cool high-tech stuff. I had to give a fairly-long ride to a friend's two young kids today and there was plenty of room for them buckled in on the back seat next to my dog (yes the seat was protected!). I took song requests and Slacker delivered. I told them that the next song had been requested by Iceman and played "Who Let the Dogs Out?" Just another Tesla moment and another Tesla grin.

Love Iceman's slacker song request!

Was hoping my car would arrive at the SC today, but Barry said it didn't come in...he thinks probably tomorrow. Crossing my fingers for a weekend pickup. Then will be taking my car in to get the paint armor appplied (full hood, front, and doors). Will be sad to be tesla-less but want to protect against any dings, rocks, etc. as soon as possible.

Can't wait to share photos and Model S stories with everyone :)

Spleen,

I tried several times to create an account on OpConnect but clicking the link takes me no where. I have an email to OpConnect to find out what is wrong.

My old Better Place fob worked in all the current OpConnect chargers that I've tried to date (Ala Moana street level, Aina Haina Shopping Center, Stadium Marketplace). I do not have any money in place on my OpConnect account or my old Better Place account.

For those trying to figure out public charging infrastructure, most of the Volta chargers (Ala Moana mall level, Kahala Mall, Pearlridge Mall, Koko Marina Shopping Center, etc etc) are free to use and do not require activation fobs. The three big networks in Hawaii that require *something* to activate chargers are 1) Better Place / OpConnect (free) (probably the biggest network in Hawaii, requires fob which is no longer available from the company, and has very slow charging rates for Teslas (15 amps) until they upgrade the chargers), 2) ChargePoint (varies) (government facilities, some municipal parking lots, Disney Aulani) (requires RFID card of some kind to activate though in a pinch, you can call the 1-800 number on the front of the charger during business hours to get their help desk to activate the charger - there is an actual ChargePoint activation card that you can request, most ChargePoints seem to be 30 amps), 3) Blink (pay) (I've only spotted these in Walmart parking lots to date, don't know their charging rate but suspect it's 30 amps as well). I would go ahead and request an OpConnect, ChargePoint, and Blink activation card from their respective networks since they're free to obtain just in case you need them (as mentioned previously, the OpConnect cards are currently not compatible with the existing Better Place chargers but you'll definitely be in a good position whenever they upgrade the chargers to real OpConnect ones with a better charging rate).

Oh, and on a side note, I've got HomeLink working on both the garage door at my place as well as my parents house. As others have mentioned, it's just following the steps on the main screen as well as making sure that you hit the training button on the garage door opener motor at the appropriate time.

Navigation in Hawaii: Has anyone else had difficulty getting the nav system to recognize a dash (" - ") in addresses? There are loads of places in Hawaii with such addresses including the Tesla service center, so this is important.

Using voice commands has never worked with a dash for me so I try typing them in. But that only works on occasion.

When typing in an address with a dash the destination flag usually pops up at the correct place but both map and voice navigation most often take me to the general street area without a dash, e.g. 59-346 Named Road becomes 59 Named Road, and only rarely am I navigated to the correct, full address.

Anyone figure out a work around?

Used to have this problem with my old TomTom - couldn't navigate to any hyphenated address in Hawaii. But Navigon / Garmin has been pretty good about this so far - haven't done much navigation in the S so far but will have to take a look the next time I have the car (also based on Navigon so should be the same but ... )

Minor Issue with Tesla app on iPhone

I had not connected the dots until ddruz pointed this out. Yes, I realize now that I too have seen this. But nope, don't know a work around for it.

Here's an Tesla app issue that I noticed on my iPhone. When you look at the Charge tab on the app, you see Ideal Range and it represents the remaining miles available. However, this is not Ideal Range, it is Rated Range. The app is polling the car for info and displaying the wrong info, Rated Range even though the app labels it as Ideal Range. I wrote this up and sent it to Ownership last weekend. They replied and said, yes, I was correct, and it had not been reported before, and they were sending it over to the software engineering team. Just keep this in mind when you are checking your remaining miles on using your app.

@Nanimac - Just curious, where are you getting your MS paint armor applied, and what type?

If anyone out there is expecting their MS in early August, PM me if you're interested in getting together to inquire on a group buy with 20/20 for Glare.

Here's a thought - should we put together a wiki on TMC Hawaii's MS "preferred" vendors, or at least those that are familiar with our cars? I'd volunteer to start one, but I have no idea how to setup a wiki post on TMC (or anyplace else for that matter). I suppose I could just to a Google docs spreadsheet....

Thanks!

Will be using Pro Tint in Kalihi. They've done the tint and paint armor for all our cars over the years. I'm not sure which film he's using (my husband is handling it) but it's not the XPEL film everyone mentions in the forum. I've been happy with what he's used in the past. He'll be doing a custom cut as none of the five vendors he uses had a tesla S pre-cut. Although it won't be cheap wrapping practically the whole car, I regret not doing the doors on my audi as i have a bunch of door dings/scratches from parking garages/lots. Of course will still be finding the widest parking spaces that the farthest away from any other cars when i get my Tesla..just wish that EV charging spots were bigger!

Thank you to whoever has put together the 2-page checklist they now hand out at the Tesla Service Center when you take delivery. Very useful!

Addendum: To avoid multiple trips to DMV/Satellite City Hall: If you have a co-registrant on your Model S, make sure both names appear on the notorized Bill of Sale. Also on Bill of Sale, make sure Tesla's name appears as "Tesla Motors Inc." If incorrect, DS will have to overnight you corrected BoS before you can complete registration and receive plates.

First, I need to say: I love this thread immensely. Such a great source of info for our Hawaii Tesla community.

Suggestions for this overall thread that would help organize our efforts and minimize the combing through the now 123 pages of thread contents:

1) Is it possible for an admin to put a "sticky" at the top of each page or at least the top of the first page of the thread? If not, possibly the original poster (Dublin) could edit his/her initial post to act as a sticky.

2) Proposed "sticky" contents:
  • Brief intro to thread
  • Link to living public Google document that contains the following sections:
    • the steps to register your car after taking delivery in Hawaii
    • list of known incentives for EV drivers in Hawaii
    • BetterPlace/OpConnect process
    • Homelink setup tips
    • etc.

your guys at Pro Tint can buy the pre-cut tesla film directly from Xpel, but it ends up being $$$$. well, it will probably be about the same $$$$ with any film you use for a full wrap.

Thanks for mentioning this, hawaiikaiguy. I had problem with my bill of sale only having my name and the certificate of origin having my name and my wife's name. The staff at DMV were nice enough to give my registration but I still need to come back with the updated signed DMV form and a new bill of sale from Tesla. Tesla was great and FEDEX'd it to me in two days. I went back today and was able to finish up the registration and get my title.

Too bad I had the safety check sticker placed on my bumper. Didn't want to wait.

I didn't want my Safety Inspection Sticker (SIS) on my bumper. So I made a bracket and mounted it to the bottom of the car. I didn't like this method but it was the only way I could think without putting it on the bumper. Then ddruz showed us how he did his (Reply #945). I liked how he did that. I didn't know we could do that. So, I started thinking of a way to produce the same effect but not use a metal plate. I found some PVC sheets on Amazon. Opaque White Polyvinyl Chloride sheets 12" x 24" and ordered it.

I drew a pattern using my tag and added a tab to the right for the stickers. I took several sheets to a shop and asked them to cut the pattern. After they cut the patterns they warned me the Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene sheets would not allow the stickers to adhere to the plates. I am trying to find some paint that will stay on that sheet. In the mean time, I painted the tab on the PVC plate where the stickers will go. Here's pictures. Next step is to go back to my inspection station and talk them into replacing my existing stickers on the underside mounted bracket and put new stickers on the plate mounted behind the tag. I'll let you know the outcome on Saturday.

I picked up my car this afternoon/evening! The traffic going out there was so heavy that I got there 30 minutes late. The crew took it in stride and gave me the entire orientation. We must have left there after 7pm. I am loving my MS! It is beautiful and I must say, it does not disappoint! I forgot to take my insurance card with me so I had to behave myself and drive leisurely back to town. My car is one of those covered by today's recall so I'll be taking Red Ruby 2 back for the fix in a couple of weeks.

I am interested in doing the Glare. If anyone else wants to get together to see if we could get a multi-car deal, let me know.

Hawaiiskibum, That's wonderful ! Great, great, great. We need pictures. Before and after your Glare. You are showing your big T-Grin. That's so cool. Psst, time to change your TMC Signature to reflect your delivery.
Tell us about your car. What do you think? What do you like best?

Nanimac, Wonderful. FINALLY. So happy for you. Hope you get it this weekend.

Congrats to both you and Hawaiiskibum.

Spleen, Yes, the plastic plate from the full size 12x24 inch sheet is the entire plate that fits behind the tag and most is covered by the tag. Yes, the tab is my solution to a metal tab sticking out and risking working loose.

I had three different sheets of PVC like material. Drew the pattern on one, and tool all threee to Min Plastics just off Dillingham @ King to cut them. I matched the tag to screw holes on the car and drilled them a little larger for the Torx head screws that came with the MS. The sheet was 3/16" thick and I didn't need longer screws. One of my sheets is 1/4" thick and I think it is thick enough.

I didn't ask Min Plastic for a quote for the PVC sheets. I bought 4 ranging in price from $12.xx to $ $ 22.xx and the best choice to work with was the $ 12.xx one. Min Plastic charged me $ 15.00 each to cut the pattern out of the sheets.

I suggest you talk to Min Plastic about their recommendation regarding the material they would use to insure the stickers will adhere. As I was leaving, they seemed to know more that I would have guessed that they would.

Congratulations, Hawaiiskibum. It is a great feeling when you get a new car but with the MS, it seems more so a thrill. It helps to be a techie. Playing with all the features is the fun part too. But the drive is awesome. When you have your insurance card in the car, open it up a little. The acceleration is unreal.

Hawaiikaiguy, How's the car now that you have had it a couple of days? Can you give us a report? Did the car get a name yet?

Our blue 40 kWh superstar is great! Got tint job and deluxe paint protection kit done @ Protint. Opened her up a bit on H3. Even when going really fast in this car, it doesn't really feel like you're going too fast -- dangerous! In 1 week, we've put over 300 miles on it, but never had it below 60 rated miles remaining. Took her up the steepest parts of St. Louis Heights without any issues, plenty of uphill power (and coincidentally met a really cool guy up there who showed us an incredibly beautifully restored Shelby).

My almost-4-yo son loves the rear-facing seats. He's always asking to go for a ride, and alternates between calling the car a Tesla and a racecar. At red lights when we're the first car, he counts down "3-2-1-BLASTOFF!!!" Then I mash. The tinting really helps out in the back keeping him cool, but he still says he's hot sometimes; we're considering getting this fan for him (have to figure out where to clip it). Facing the middle row AC vents up also helps, and it blasts AC the best when only the forward-facing fan option is selected (no feet, no dash).

Our beauty has a tan interior (with obeche gloss). Our second child is 15-months old, so she doesn't fit in the 3rd row yet. As such, we put a car seat in the middle row. To protect the leather seats, we put down a spare tan bath towel that happens to be the same color as the tan interior, and it covers all parts of the car seat that go up against the Tesla's leather interior. From what I've read in my research, this is pretty much the best way to protect the leather; pretty much any other material would scratch/age the leather. We also have a strict no food/drink rule for the car

Barry recommends Meguires Quik Detail for spot cleaning (bird plop, etc) -- I opted for 22oz bottle -- while out on the road, and microfiber cloths/rags of course. Both available for reasonable prices at Don Quijote. I picked some up last night, and I keep them in the plug adapter bag in the 3rd row side well. Going to wash weekly @ home using the Junkman's 2 bucket method Does anyone have recommendations for portable/battery-operated mini vacuum?

There was 1 issue that I had to report to Tesla, and it was pretty strange: when in D, there was a loud clicking metal-on-metal sound coming from the driver-side rear wheel area when the car was moving forward. Sounded brake-related and the individual click would happen multiple times on a single wheel revolution, but Tesla's remote diagnostics found nothing wrong and no logged faults. Was advised by Tesla that I could still drive the car with no problem, though I noticed it was getting closer to 400 Wh per mile, instead of the usual 320 - 340 that we would average. (Co?)incidently, the problem just "went away" after the Tesla software update was installed overnight.

Question: Does anyone else's Model S drip A LOT of water after the car has been used and is off (probably just A/C condensation, but want to see if mine is dripping more than normal)? Even hours later, Our garage floor always seems wet under the rear driver side wheel where the dripping occurs, meaning there's significant amount of dripping. Just worried that it's the liquid surrounding the battery potentially, though Tesla has shown no logged faults.

So we're fully registered, safety check sticker (directly) on the bumper. Have to go in to the service center some point for the recall, and they have to replace a side chrome piece that was scratched on delivery, but we're in no rush to do so. No name yet, and that's fine too!

Any Tesla meetups planned?

hawaiikaiguy, am thinking of planning a meetup sometime in late July/early August. Was thinking we could even do a sunday drive and parade our teslas around Oahu :)

Also, maybe it's time we have our own forum group vs just a thread? Some of the other states have one.

Picking up my car Saturday morning! Was hoping to get it sooner but work is interfering with my tesla time :p

nanimac, I asked the Admin of TMC. Let's see what happens. I asked that they pull us out and put us in our own "Hawaii" forum. And bring this thread over too.

What time do you expect to be at the SC on Saturday to get yours?

A parade sounds like fun. How we gonna line'em up? Black, Blue, Red, White? Green? Silver? Silver, Silver, Silver, Blue, Blue, White, White? White?

Psssst ALL !! When you are at the SC, ask Barry for a couple of the EV Protocol Charge Cards. He knows what you mean.

Hawaiikaiguy, Excellent write up. Nice job. Good info regarding Quik Detail. I like the no food/no drink rule. Mine too. It's all I can do to bring myself to put groceries in the frunk to get them home.
