Headliner dye?

Cool man - Those first few sprays inside the car were scary, but no turning back at that point. The overspray gets everywhere, so you have to cover everything. I used multiple overlapping layers of old bedsheets. Weeks on, the paint smell is finally undetectable (or I’ve gone smell blind from COVID). I’ve never attempted anything like this, so we’ll see how it holds up long term. In the short term, I much prefer the new color scheme. Should the color fade or thin out, I could always touch it up fairly easily.

Merica...do you think the headliner can slide back thru the hatchback?....maybe angle it and slide it out.

Do you have tips to masking and covering the interiors to spray in place.?

like ...did u cover up the doors?...how did u drape the plastic across so paint doesn’t drip to the floor?...did u cover half of the car then do the other half so you have a place to seat and paint?

There is no way to get the headliner out without removing the windshield. I tried. I pulled it down and tried every which way to get it out of the hatch. It won't fit - don't waste your time trying like I did. I wasted hours on that debacle, and it's not exactly easy to get it back in place once removed.

I used a ton of bed sheets for masking. You can tuck it into the various crevasses/trim peices fairly easily. You will want to cover everything in the car. There is no way to do this quickly. Take your time and do not take any shortcuts here. If you don't cover something, you'll be mad. Ask me how I know. Let's just say tiny black dots on grey leather are very time consuming, but not impossible to remove. Bed sheets and time are cheap in comparison. I used separate ones for the dash/mcu/instrument cluster. I didn't want to take any chances damaging those or the wood trim. I also covered all the painted surfaces. If you do get a few speckles of dye on your paint, they will easily come off with a clay bar or similar. I had a few because of a bad touch up spray towards the end, and used a synthetic claybar sponge. They were gone in 2 mins.

The dye gets everywhere in tiny, mist like droplets. You'll absolutely want some type of respirator rated for painting and eye protection. I had tiny dye droplets all over my face and glasses. I can't imagine that stuff in your lungs. That would suck a lot.

The dye doesn't drip - if it is you are laying it on way too thick. You'll want multiple thin coats until the color is even.

I will definitely leave the headliner in place.

I wind up buying the 6 pillar pieces and 2 visors on eBay in black Alcantara...about $500 total

how did you remove the seatbelt buckles thru the b-pillar plastic trim?

You can disassemble the anchor between the B-pillar and the seat. I took lots of pictures to make sure I put them back together correctly. The actual buckles are the same way. Pay attention to how the parts are laid out before removing them, and the reassembly will be much easier.

It’s fairly simple, just take your time.

Looks good so far. I’m paranoid, but if I were you I’d drape some towels or blankets over the mcu and other dash areas under the plastic just in case. They’ve got a bit more weight and will fit tighter up against those surfaces.

Hope yours turns out as well as mine did. I don’t regret doing this project one bit.

I have a 2013 model S and have been considering it as well. I have an alcantara headliner.. Has anyone tried the same method with the softer material?

I would love nothing more than to get rid of the two tone interior!!
