Heater makes a hum/vibration when turning on

We took the MY car camping a few days ago. The AC was sounding fine until the outside temperature dipped to about 30 F. Then I started to notice an intermittent hum accompanied by a subtle vibration. At first, I thought it was a neighboring RV watching an action movie very loudly (with an epic sound system), but it quickly became obvious to me that it was my own car. I'm guessing it's the heater kicking on at random as the climate control tries to regulate the temperature I set. Has anyone else noticed this?

Would it still be the compressor if outside temp was colder than my set temp? I only asked because I've sat in the car in my garage when it was 90 F outside and never heard/felt the compressor turn on.
