Help me time my M3 purchase.

Hi guys, long time lurker, first time poster.

Tesla model 3 will be my next car. I want to buy one but i want to time it to a few things. I don't have all the expertise that permeates this forum so I thought I'd ask it here:

I want to time my buy to:

1. 100% guarantee i don't miss out on the $3750 tax credit

2. give me the highest chance of obtaining a M3 with HW3 ( with upgraded sensors new cameras, not just the on board comp)

When would you purchase to achieve those 2 things?? condition 1 is more important than condition 2 obviously.

Obviously the merits of the two conditions are up for debate. For me, I have a car that can run until before the tax credit gets lowered. I drive 3k miles per year (I know ridiculously low because i ride my bicycle to work). I have the financing to buy anytime between now and june and it would not matter to me when to buy for the sake of this exercise.

Execution of the buy: Let's say I want to take delivery mid may for a april build M3. Do i just deposit the $2500 and tell the delivery adviser that I want a a may delivery and make sure i get a car build in april? or do I wait until april to deposit the $2500?

They (tesla) are going to match you to a car, not build you one. There will be ones on the ground they want to match you with. I would simply "simply place an order" 30 days before the end of the tax credit. They will likely match you with a car within 5-7 days, that was built 2-3 weeks before that. Thats what I would do if I had your goals.

Thanks much! That makes perfect sense, could you clarify where I would go to verify the last day for the tax credit? is it mid year june 30th??

June 30th is the last day to get the $3750 EV tax incentive before it is cut in half: Electric Vehicle & Solar Incentives

Nothing is definite yet for the AP HW 3.0 release date. However, there are rumors about a March 15th event to unveil the Model Y and possibly HW 3.0. What to expect from Tesla in 2019: Model Y, Model S/X refresh, and more

I am in the same situation as you. I am ready to pull the trigger on an M3, but want to wait for HW 3.0 because I think it is close given that Tesla employees started testing it in December. Tesla Recruits Employees To Test Autopilot Hardware 3.0 On Personal Vehicles

HAHAHA this is precisely the kind of expertise that I needed!! I wish I could figure out how to like your post to give you more credit!!!

As far as timing of the deposit and not missing the EV tax credit, when are you going to ask them to make your vehicle?

Wow exact same boat here. I would have bought a month ago, in fact, if they offered a HW3 upgrade for say $1k-1.5k. I have no interest in “fsd” for $3k-5k but would be very interested in just the hardware upgrade to improve EAP and preserve resale value. But since the only hardware 3 upgrade figure I’ve seen bandied about is $5k for those who don’t do FSD I am biding my time until it’s in all production cars.

How are you planning to time your build so you can guarantee delivery before June 30th?

@Th3120ck glad I could be of assistance. :) I am going to place the order as soon as I they can confirm that HW 3.0 will be included with my build. Planning on an M3 Performance. Debating over Midnight Silver Metallic or Multi-Coat White.

Ahhh!!

I'm going with the LR AWD!! Thanks again for the help! when are you going to order yours with the timing if they DON'T announce the HW3 before June 30th?

Smart move on waiting for more info on EAP HW3.0

And waiting till June to put in order to guarantee getting a 2019 build M3. Better resale value than 2018 build.

Having said that, I advised a friend to buy an almost new M3 with < 5000 miles with LR, PUP, EAP that can be bought for 20% off msrp. Better than timing for the $3750 tax credit.

Good question re timing...In fact I started another thread previously asking how we might confirm HW3 being on a vehicle or not (believe it’s just popping a panel open and having a quick look but not sure) and I got a lot of replies about what a dumb question that was and that I should just get FSD for $3k and worry no more.

My current plan is to order as soon as they announce HW3 being on every new car ordered and then just confirming with each person at every step of the way that HW3 is indeed on the vehicle. Hopefully by that point I will have figured out how to confirm it myself physically and so if I learn it’s not on the vehicle I will refuse delivery or return it. (I heard there were some folks who ordered an S after Elon said they would get HW2.5 who actually wound up getting HW2.)

Typing this out I’m realizing you’re smart to wait for a few weeks after they make the announcement. I guess I will as well.

My suggestion would be to start communicating your interests with a delivery specialist and see what they say. They should be able to give you a good idea on how to best meet your needs so you can stop lurking and just get in the car. Good luck!

I'm actually debating the same thing myself, as I'm about to pull the trigger on a Model 3 P, but I don't want the early adopter penalty. That said, is there anything else that might be added besides updated auto pilot? As that's not something that I was looking to add anyway.

Tesla is getting better about preventing the Osborne Effect so I would time it to maximize the credit. Order in May to get the car in June. Hold out as long as possible and the odds of getting new features goes up.

Honestly though, the car is so good already that once you get it you will wish you had pulled the trigger sooner, not later.

I am in the same boat. Ready to plunk down my cash, but want to wait for the HW3. Do we know if the cars delivered outside the US recently had HW3?

I'll be watching this thread. Don't need HW2.5, as I already have an Osborne 1 in my office.
