since last update when using nav the nav volume/ mute selector is gone and can’t turn off spoken directions. also see small lock/ unlock icon on top left of screen tapping cycles it but what is it locking/ unlocking?

The NAV volume can be adjusted at least two ways: 1. When navigating, tap “show directions”. Then tap the little speaker looking icon. 2. Adjust the scroll wheel volume control while NAV is speaking.
The lock icon in the upper left of the screen, controls the door locks. Nothing to do with Navigation.
AFAIK, there has been no change with either of these functions, for a very long time. Both are covered thoroughly in the manual.
