Hit a bear

Car is not even a month old. Unfortunately a bear ran onto the highway and I couldn't avoid it. Two airbags went off plus front damage. Was told there might not be any frame damage.

Looking at these pictures is hard to bear.

Glad you are ok. (I hope? Airbags are no joke.)

Were you using Autosteer? Did you notice any AEB response? After looking at these impressive European safety pedestrian test videos, I’d kind of think there might be some slowing for a central impact like that. Maybe the neural net is not trained for black bears though (I guess this can be a test case), and bears move much faster than pedestrians. I assume you were traveling at over 55mph (before slowing) too. At least it wasn’t a grizzly.

Would guess that’ll be $15-$20k.

I feel bad about the bear, but I guess these things happen.

So did the bear go up and over the inside of the hood to bend it in half like that?
If so it probably protected you from the bear coming in through the windshield.
Looks like that impact would have been pretty scary.
