Holding off on Powerwall purchase until after Battery Day?

I'd be surprised given how far out Tesla or third party installers are on installs for Powerwalls (late Q4/2020 or Q1/2021) that it would make any difference. The longer you wait to go to contract the further out your install date will be and seeing you are in Sacramento aren't you prone to the PG&E PSPS or rotating blackouts? When we placed our order it was for PW2, GW1 and Q-Cell's 315W panels. Finishing up install now. However during this time the new GW2s came out and the Q-Cell panels went from 315s to 340s. They substituted both for our install. Plus they matched the lower price of the new 340s when they came out. If PW3 were to come out during your wait, I think that they would install the newer equipment if you hadn't gone to install yet.

With battery day for Tesla just about 2 weeks away, is anyone holding off on their powerwall purchase? I am ready to purchase a 14.28kW system with 2 powerwalls but with battery day so close I am tempted to hold off on my order until then.

If I were you, in the exact same situation, I would likely wait till after battery day. I think there is a possibility of something being announced for energy products. Of course, by waiting, you are also rolling the dice with the chance that your install wont make it into this year, so you need to be prepared to potentially lose 4% of your federal tax credit toward the purchase of your system.

I dont follow this stuff closely, and tesla does not iterate on any specific cycle like other manufacturers do, but I could see them announcing some expanded battery storage device. That would not have stopped me from ordering earlier in the year, but since its only a couple weeks more what I personally would likely do is place my order the week of battery day (before, but that week) which would give me the best chance of both (hopefully) getting installed this year, and also ensure that I would get in the queue, in case whatever they announce creates a lot of orders, yet late enough that I would likely be able to be swapped to whatever the new thing is, if there IS anything new.

BTW they didn’t mention to us we were getting the newer equipment. They have the right to substitute and just did it. They re-did the line drawings and looking at them that’s how we knew we were getting the new 340W panels. We had called to inquire about the new GW2s prior and were told that they were already in the process of adding them to people’s existing orders.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Battery Day sees a flood of new orders from people thinking they need to wait. I guess knowing they will install

It's an option. But that will make it more likely your install misses the 26% tax credit in 2020, and drops into the 22% tax credit in 2021.

If It were me I should just make the order. It is highly likely your install will not start until after Battery Day. And past history has shown that people whose configurations were of older design AND their equipment is not installed, can get the later design. People just went through this with Tesla Energy Gateway v1 to v2.

IF battery day included an announcement of say a powerwall 3. Realistically how soon would most here believe they would see production / actually be an option for Tesla solar orders (not 3rd party installers)
Or is this nearly impossible to predict cause .. well its Tesla :p

im with @jboy210 .. went ahead with my order to get the more sure thing of 26% fed .. but who knows maybe tesla may lower solar accordingly in 2021... again its Tesla

Honestly, if you order now you are in the best place possible. You can delay your installation if you really want for PW3 if you hear rumors of it, but have the best chance of early install and 26% tax credit..

With Powerwall supply what it is currently, I wouldn't be surprised to see a shift at Battery day. Powerwall inventory seems to be extremely scarce though so there wont be much of the Osborne effect. Tesla knows how to manage these problems so the customer isn't left installing last generation product.

I am just curious how would the Fed know we installed this year or next? I bought a new Model 3 in 2019 and got the tax benefit when I filed last year. But I am not sure how Fed verifies it though I had to give them a VIN number. I think the VIN number had to be provided so no one else including myself can claim tax benefit in future years...

As far as knowing I think they take your signature about being truthful .. as most deductions .. and if audit occurs and you lied ..$$$$$

When I lived in Sacramento our electricity provider was SMUD, Sacramento Municipal Utility District.

On the form itself, there is no verification. Like many deductions/credits that can be claimed, you just fill out the amount (solar is line 1 on IRS form 5695) and follow the math from there. The IRS control is the audit process, where they could assess interest and penalties if you cannot document and justify the claimed credit. I would not be shocked that claiming a large energy credit probably ups the chance of an audit, all else being equal.
