Holiday Update (2021.44.25.2)- A Big Disappointment

I’m on a road trip 1000 miles from home and heading home tomorrow. Instead of spending time with the grand kids I’m playing with our Y and scouring the TMC posts on my iPad for answers to my questions. Yea, first world problems

This new Tesla version 11 reminds me of Microsoft's Windows.
Window 95 - my first real experience with Windows - loved it. Very stable and useful.
Window 98 - good improvement, and still very stable - got used to it in short order.
Windows ME - great big failure - more of a headache that anything - just plain sucked! Converted most ME systems back to 98.
Windows XP - They had to do something to correct the failure of ME - absolutely superb and stable - by far my favorite OS that Microsoft put out. A lot of casino machines and point of sales still use the XP os.
Windows Vista - pulled my hair out - bad, bad, bad. Converted most Vista machines back to XP.
Windows 7 - very stable but took a lot of time to get used to.
Windows 8 - back to sucking again.
Windows 8.1 - corrected some of the mistakes made by Windows 8 - but still bad. To hard to convert back to Windows 7.
Windows 10 - tried to fix a bunch of problems the Windows 8 and 8.1 created - tried to make it more like Windows 7.
Windows 11 - to new and a little obscure. Undetermined outcome - to early to tell.
Still to this day I use older machines that will support Windows 7 - I guess it has to remain as a
'favorite,' and I will stick with it until the bitter end.
So --- to sum it up:
My Model Y has had numerous updates since I took delivery back in March.
Tesla does not give us the option to keep any particular OS. It's just not in cards.
We will get used to the changes (good or bad.) We will need to adapt.
But I myself am confident Tesla will do the right thing. And yes - they do take feedback from their customers. They will continue to improve.
Do you know of another car company that has improvements on a monthly if not weekly basis?

given the fact that they have a LARGE screen to use for buttons and display widgets, I see zero reason to bury things in secondary menus.
its not like they have a 160x128 display (one that I use for tiny test gear that I DIY) - they have a HUGE display and they could make such good use of that vastness. instead, they do dumb *sugar* like a kid would if he was designing this.
the more tesla does, the more they show what kind of engineer they hire. (yes, that was not a compliment)

first of all, much less than half of what they do in their updates are forward progress or real improvements.
second, they are not on the track AT ALL of doing the right thing for customers. they hate customers. everything they do shows it. strange business to be in when you hate your own customer base.
thirdly, show me where they have ever listened to customers and backtracked on a bone-head decision they made. they are like some political leaders - never admit you were wrong.
finally, everyone is going to be doing the OTA thing; but lets see if they abuse it like tesla does, as they start to implement it across the brands. forced ui changes that dont really benefit the user should be optional. the first vendor that gets that right will be worthy of REAL praise, not the fanboyism that we see, daily, here.
for the manpower that tesla has today, they are doing quite a bad job, in fact. set your bar to a reasonable level and you'll see that.
If we don’t like the update, just give it a year and we might get something we like even less. 
IMO for the most part I like it, except for the loss of the trip consumption / tire pressure swipe cards along with the change to the seat heater function “buttons”.

Here is a Dashcam issue with software V11; When driving, if I honk the horn the Dashcam recording is saved as before the software update from 2021.44.6. There was no feedback on the Tesla screen that the Dashcam video was being saved. With the Dashcam set to Auto when I tapped the Dashcam widget on the bottom of the screen I was unable to save the recording. With the Dashcam set to Manual when I tapped the Dashcam widget it appears that I may have saved a recording however there is no time stamp red dot displayed in the recording to reference when the Dashcam video was saved.
Hate the new UI. Hate hate hate. Pathetic regression. Took something good and made it terrible.

Yea, thats fine if you’re home eating take out all the time. Try hiding the knives in any professional kitchen and you’d be getting reprimanded by the head chef.

How? I was driving yesterday after pickup up a hot pizza and the cabin started steaming up QUICKLY. It became a dangerous situation and since I didn't train myself in where this button is, I couldn't find the thing for a couple very important seconds.
Sure, it wasn't where I knew it to be- and sure I'll get used to to... But don't try to argue that putting it in a tap away in the HVAC controls is more intuitive than always on the screen. It's hidden now. It clearly didn't take up too much space- it was replaced with dead space. It's just taken away and left blank! Plenty instances of this- profiles, dashcam record, wifi and Bluetooth status. Nothing took the space in turn. It's just gone. Did we really need that 3/8" of real estate at the top of the map? Of course not. This update is full of thoughtlessness. Like placing the blind spot camera behind where you are likely to place your hands on the wheel. A blind, Blindspot camera. Genius. It also looks like an afterthought (because it was) and hastily slapped in there. No polish or elegance as to how it's displayed. Or, if the map is blocked by a full screen app- like if you want to see the odometer now that cards are gone- the small indicator for your next turn has moved from above the car to below it. Where the blind spot camera is. Where you are likely to rest your hand. To see the arrow for your turn, I have to duck and tilt my head to the right. Why was it moved down there? What was the problem with where it was, at a glance, next to the speed that I keep my eye on. Nothing is there instead- it's like someone who codded this on a desktop and never sat behind the wheel decided this.
I like the dock at the bottom, but it was done with no sense at all. I'm given a pick of about 15 or so things, 2 I might ever want docked. Why is it so limited? Why only 4? There is room for way more. Why can't I assign a shortcut for the odometer, or dash cam record? Anything on the screen that can be tapped should be able to be dragged down there. Seriously, if I want to drag my favorite taco joint from the map down there- I should be able to have a Taco Button. If I want to have my favorite Czarface track always available literally at the push of a button- I should be able to do that as sure as I'd be able to have a button for Megaphone right there in my customizable dock. Other than the complexity of the task (my MINI Cooper that I just gave up does this...) I have no idea why it wasn't done this way. The implementation is beyond poor. I'll never use FM radio. Why do I ever have to see it? I removed it, Caraoke and other things I'll not use in the last interface. We've just been given less option under the guise of "customization".
I hope there are a lot of updates that fix this utter nonsense, and soon. The good news is that it appears the vast majority have the same complaints here, giving me hope it can be addressed. The important part is that we are all providing our criticism. To the chap who glibly stated "first world problems". I assume the implication is that we should shut up and deal with it. That's absolutely the wrong way to think about it. If we don't speak up and provide constructive criticism, how will things be addressed and solved? That attitude is completely silly. As is this update.
It does dismiss indeed some of our gripes. A lot of people say "just use the voice command if you can't find the new location".
A big complaint for many is the tire pressure and odometer. Go ahead and try "show my odometer". Neither work. At all.
There is also no Internet where I live for the first few miles after I leave my wifi. So if the team had even tried to make sure the voice command works for crap they changed- it still wouldn't reliably work.

Edit- I see your fix, that the user need be more creative to get it to work. My response:
Try it. Try it without Internet. Same result. Doesn't work. They forgot to try these after the removed cards and placed it somewhere else. There is little to no excuse for this.
The project manager seriously should be let go for this oversight. I'm not being dramatic. It is just indicative of the work that was done on v.11.
Apple took Musk's UX people. This feels like the result, and it is comically bad.

Used to be a voice command for checking tire pressures. Now there isn't. Wonder how many other voice commands are gone? You'd think they would be adding commands to compensate for "cleaning up" the screen by burying things. But the light show is kind of fun . . . once.
Correct; with V11 you have to get a little creative with the voice commands. "Tire Pressure" no longer works but "Display Service Settings" will show you the Service settings screen with the tire pressure readouts. Clearly V11 is not ready for Prime Time. Tesla needs to add widgets for additional functions including Sentry mode, LTE, BT, Wipers, Headlights, Defroster, Seat Heaters, Charge and other settings. The UI needs to be able to display more than 4 selected widget controls at a time. There needs to be an option to always display one of the Trips odometers (Current Trip/Drive, Since Last Charge, Trip A, Trip B (Lifetime)) underneath the vehicle graphic, as with the previous software version.

I think the debate on if we "like it or not" is fine. But the security and usability should not be left to personal taste. It's science. I've been thru all the software updates since 2012 and this one is the less "I'm driving a car not playing with an iPad at home" version I've ever seen...

The Tesla voice commands have always been the easiest way to access many of the Tesla vehicle functions. Learn a dozen or so of the voice commands and this will enhance the user experience as you interact with the Tesla vehicle.
The voice command "Tire Pressure" no longer works in V11. Instead, you can use the voice command "Display Service Settings."
Oh yeah Tesla takes customers feedback? Never heard of that. Is there a form on their website that I’m missing? A survey sent by email that went straight to my spam? Their PR/Marketing department is a department of 1 and he loves tweeting about dogecoin, I’m not sure how Tesla would take feedback…
That being said, yes, OTA updates are great and that’s the beauty of it, for everyone who doesn’t like this version, I think that we can all hope for a somewhat improved version “soon”, incorporating some of the good things from this update (love the contrast of colors, the blind spot camera was a good idea, although it apparently doesn’t work that well at night, I also love the personalizable launch bar at the bottom, just wish it was 100% personalizable) with some things a little more user-friendly.

The pizza thing is hilarious, and it happened to me 3 days ago! I was wondering why in the world the windshield fogged up that fast until I glanced at the 2 hot pizza boxes in the passenger seat and saw steam rising out of them.
While talking about dead spaces, let me also bring up another pet peeve of mine - the right scroll wheel. When not using AP, it’s along for the ride. It could have been the multifunction scroll wheel like in my S, but no.
Really, Tesla UX is the bottom of the barrel, considering they have the resources to hire the best talent available to them in the Bay Area. Seriously needs a major overhaul of that department. Not gonna happen, though. I’m sure.

That is sooo intuitive. Does the ‘open butthole’ still work? That is another example of intuition and a great sense of humor.
