Worth noting that if it get installed by an approved installer, yiu get 4 year warranty, otherwise its 1 year.

I took the view that approved installers were so expensive (I had quotes at 1200 and 1400) that I could just buy a new unit for the difference. But then I got a quote from a non approved installer, at 1700/1800 depending on option. I recon a fair price, based on time (been told 1/2 days job @ iirc 350) and parts, is £650/700 ex charge point.

Save yourself £100 and get rid of the potentially problematic (its something else to go wrong unlike a correctly installed passive earth rod see this sorry tale TESLA Charger Install - No earth) Matt-E and get a basic earth rod - I recon earth rod would be £50 (parts only cost a couple of quid) and they have years of reliable operation.

I recon installers are seeing these Matt-e's as an upsell. I cannot see how they can say it is more reliable when it is an active device when an earth rod is basically a passive 2m rod in the ground and a piece of wire bonded to it. Just not as much markup on a couple £ of parts compared with a £££? unit.

I had a 20 minute call earlier today with the Spark that ran in the cabling for my charger (two years ago), it appears that Matt-E's are being pushed heavily on their re-certification courses for EV installations. They went so far as to say that "only a Matt-E is recommended now, unless the entire property is converted from TN-C-S to TT".

They've gone away to speak to NICEIC to confirm what the actual rules are since I'm still pushing for an Earth Rod, and based on my reading of the 18th Regs Section 722 it still seems to be permitted!

I had my Tesla wall charger installed in Mill Hill NW7 today. It cost £820 for a 3 phase installation (plus £460 for the actual charger) but he used the cheaper manual earth rod not the electronic Matt-E thing. I used a reputable installer with a shop in Barnet that specialises in EV home chargers.
