Back in January 2013 I had my 2012 Model S delivered to my home. Of course, the service center was 120 miles away and it seems that home delivery was the norm. According to the driver, Tesla was in such a hurry to get my car on the truck and count is as a 2012 delivery that they drove the car 12 miles in the rain to meet the driver. The car was also delivered with metal fragments in one of the tires (it was leaking air) and the both rear wheels were badly scratched. The delivery specialist was very upset that they delivered it to my house before they had a chance to inspect the car. In the end, all was taken care of right away (2 new wheels/tires and detailing).
I'm sure this is not how they handle things now, but as long as you can drive your car once you get it, I don't see a problem with home delivery. I would recommend that you take detailed pictures of car (with the driver), in case there is a dispute regarding any damage.
