how can they configure cars when there is no pricing?

When the first production reservation holder is invited to configure, we will have our pricing. Given the amount of changes that happened between the first signature configuring and now, it is pretty obvious they were no where near ready at that time to reveal pricing. It was relatively easy to change things for signatures because they all are paying the same price for the most part. For everyone else once you announce a price you have to honor it for people who configure at that price.

I totally agree with this assessment. In the past few months Tesla has:
- added a 6-seat option
- made 3rd row seats standard
- potentially changed the onboard charger from 60 Amps -> 72 Amps -> 48 Amps
- potentially changed ultra white leather to faux leather

Who knows what else will change in the next few months before regular production is unveiled.
- folding 2nd row seats?
- 75kWh pack?
- 2nd row center console in 6-seat configuration?
