How crazy has it been at the Dedham delivery center as the 12/31 deadline approached?

DEDHAM, MA
I drove past the Dedham store today about 4 PM. from what i could see from the street, it looked as if there were dozens of people in the showroom and in the delivery center, maybe 75-100 people in the areas i could see. So, it looked very busy.
I am not curious enough to leave my house and drive over there, but I am curious if the store is still trying to deliver cars this evening. The limiting factor may be the RMV computers. Once those shut down, no registrations can be processes. Anyone know if they run past 5 PM or so?

Good luck to anyone hoping to take delivery today -- I hope everyone got his or her car!

My parents bought an S100D last Thursday (12/27) in Mt Kisco. Their Delivery Specialist said they had 110 deliveries the prior Saturday, and expected even more the following Saturday. I can only imagine what it was like today...

From this page, Dedham was open 09:00 to 00:00. US Tesla Stores and Galleries Special Hours

The sales transaction is what's important for tax purposes, not necessarily what day you registered the vehicle. At least that is my understanding from reading the legalese.
Interesting! Of course, the late buyers might have been able to take possession but not able to register the car, in which case they'd likely have to make a second trip on Wednesday to get it registered. Still, likely worth a second trip for the extra $3750 in tax credits.

Tesla was staging S/X/3's all the way down route 1 at an old Buick dealership. There must have been 200+ when I checked a few weeks ago. Be interesting to see if the lot is clear now.
Right. I saw those, too. Someone said on another thread that lot is only one of several that Tesla uses in the Dedham area to store/stage cars!

Yeah, I'd guess they have a lot more than a couple hundred staged just because of the unbelievable number they're delivering every day. A lot with 100-200 cars could be totally turned over in a day, from what I understand. That's a lot of cars.

...I'll see myself out.

We picked up our X on 12/22. They had a bunch of kiosks set up in the showroom to move people through. My wife was somewhat chagrined when we pulled into the lot and asked where the park, and were told "you can usually find a spot in the hooters parking lot around the corner." It was not exactly what you'd expect for dropping $100k+ on a car :)

The delivery process itself was also pretty rushed - after the paperwork, our contact briefly sat in the car with us, said something like "it's pretty intuitive, got questions? You'll figure it out", and we were out of there.

They were clearly slammed - i asked if we could use the supercharger, and it was immediately clear that it wasn't going to happen. So the actual process of picking up the car was pretty crummy, but not a surprise, given the rush.

@djk121 Did you and your wife go through the X's menus on your own yet? Have either of you watched Tesla's user videos? If you need some help, tips, or just a patient person, I'm sure there's someone local to you that could help out.

It's really unfortunate that they can't take their time to show owners their new cars anymore. I keep saying they should do Genius Bar type group lessons when people come to pick up their vehicles, or if people want to come by to learn more on their own. At the very least, they should do a more in-depth guide to setting up and using the vehicle for new owners.

@tomc603 I actually didn't mind the shallow intro that much, as it's stretched the discovery process out a bunch, and it's fun to figure out something new every couple of days.

That said, I'm sure there is a segment of the buyer market that will be turbopissed at how different the delivery experience is from other luxury cars.

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying! I've never seen the phrase turbopissed, and I really hope it wasn't a typo because I'm totally going to start using it. :D Anyway, yeah, I do hope Tesla does something for the owners that haven't been obsessive about these things.

Safe driving!

Pretty sure that's already in process for Tesla. They are building a conference room in each of their new delivery hubs to be used for staff meetings and for group introduction to and instruction on how to operate the cars and navigate the UI. At least that's what the room's purpose was described as in the couple of filings I've seen it mentioned in.

That's fantastic to hear.

I ordered my MS on 12/27 which was located in New Jersey. They assured me it would either be in Dedham on Saturday (12/29) or Monday the latest (12/31) to get the full tax credit. I received a text and a follow up phone call that weekend that it would be ready at 11am on 12/31. I arrived at 11 and yes it was crazy town. I dropped off my trade in (minivan) and they immediately drove it off. I had the 3 kids with me in tow (wife was working) and was later told after checking in that my car was not yet on site but it was located in a close depot. My schedule pickup time was pushed out to 3:30 but I was never informed. The specialist realized this mistake and rented a vehicle for me so I could at least get the kids some lunch. The rental was a new MS from enterprise.

Come 3:30 and I had to yet wait a bit longer. At this time my insurance agent office was already closed so I had to sign up with Liberty Mutual, who had agents on site for this very reason, in order to get the car off the lot. By 5-5:30 I had the plates installed and I was on my way. The last specialist I spoke to said they had 170 deliveries for that day and it was close to that for the past 2 months. Haven't been by there since then so can't say how it is now.

Just checked the More-EV site. There were 1000 rebate registrations in Massachusetts for Telsa in the month of December. I expect the number to be just as high in January since some people may have delayed their rebate registration because of the holidays. Total of 3,500 teslas applied for a rebate in 2018. In the last 4 months of 2018, the number of Teslas driving in Mass essentially doubled from 2500 to 5000.

Things should quiet down in January since the More-EV rebate is reduced along with the federal tax credit.

By the way, when I took delivery in October in dedham, they said I was one of two people taking delivery in the afternoon.

How right you are! From the mor-ev.org web site - December dwarfs all previous months! Just over 1000 of those 1170 EV rebates are Teslas.

According to "Auto Alliance" (Auto mfgs trade & lobbying group), 367K vehicles were sold in MA in 2017, of which 117K were cars. So in December roughly 17% of the cars sold in MA were plug-in! Incredible!
