I have a buddy who is interested in potentially ordering a new Model Y. I seem to recall that one could talk to a sales rep and potentially find either a demo unit with some miles or a new inventory unit that wasn't delivered for whatever reason at a discount.

The exact discount amount claims seem to vary from "nothing" to "$1/mile for demo units" all the way to "9% for new inventory" is the range I've seen mentioned.

I'm curious what people are seeing and if this range I mentioned seemed accurate. Would it be as simple as talking to a Tesla sales rep, listing what he wants and then waiting for said rep to find his car at a 9% discount? Seems too simple so I'm guessing this isn't the case. I've seen the 9% discount figure confidently dropped into conversation on this forum very recently though. I'm curious what the experience has been from those here who have successfully gone down this path.

I got a discount of approximately $6 per mile on my 2020 model S demo last June. There were no improvements I would be missing by getting the demo over ordering a new car then. The demo was in perfect condition and I haven't had a need to contact Tesla for any reason since getting the car, v which I love.

9% is a lot. Last quarter I saw some performance cars with 4500 off. Those cars were osborned by rolling improvements though.

I just checked this for my area and a demo vehicle with less than 500 miles was about $350 more than the online configurator for a new one? Maybe they can do that due to demand and the option to get one immediately?

That was my thought too when I first read the post a member here made in another unrelated (I think) thread. The more I thought on it the more I wanted more details. I did some searching to try to find the post again to contact the author for more details. A few days has passed since so I can't find any good results unfortunately. Not even sure the subforum it was in but I don't think I'm subscribed to the thread anymore as a ctrl+F through the last couple of pages in the most recent threads I'm subscribed to didn't yield any results.

How many miles just so I can run the math on how much that discount was. I've seen some posting $200 here and $350 there but that's not even worth mentioning IMO. I've seen some talk about thousands in discounts on demo & new inventory so those are more the big whales I'm trying to take down.

If he's getting an S or X then he might be able to get a "big" discount of like $8k to $12k, especially since the factory is shut down for what is widely believed to be major upgrades.

However, if he's going for a 3 or Y expect to be damn close to $1/mile discounts. Very very occasionally you'll see a weird $4k or $5k discount when the car only has like 900 miles on it or something, but that's very very rare and usually only shows up the last day of the quarter.

That said, Seattle right now actually has some pretty rare deals...

2021 Model 3 LR AWD with 235 miles on it discounted $310

2020 Model Y Performance with 1,112 miles discounted $4,200
(This is a Stealth Performance WITH inductions! Might be a HUGE perk for someone, it also has a tow hitch, they seem to discount the tow hitch a lot more on the demos)

2020 Model Y Performance with 166 miles discounted $5,030
Ubers, and full Performance upgrade... maybe this one fell off the truck?
